Depends how you interpret it. Strictly speaking, we were meant to "Use a non-stationary light source as the primary method of illuminating", so I guess those are the ones you call "just sorta lighted".

I assume that in YOUR eyes, it is only light painting when the movable light source is actually the subject of the photo.

Please do a bit more thinking and reading about it, challenges like this one are such a great learning opportunity.

Well, when i think of painting with light, i think of actually painting with light. where the movement of the light creates some sort of image, or "painting."
Just my personal interpretation. I'd like to know what all of yours were so i can look at the entries from maybe different eyes? thanks!

Nicky, Painting with light from all I've studied, can not only be useing the light to make designs, BUT also useing the light to add depth, detail, color, to a photo. So if you take a picture of lets say a tree, and take your light and draw down one side to bring out the color and detail then it is painted, Also shinning your light briefly on any stationary subject to enhance the picture is also light painted. You can even have a lit subject, but use (flashlight for instance) to enhance the sujbect, or even the background. Does that make sense to you? My eyes are crossed from working on the computor so I hope I stated that correctly...

I appreciate the fact that you asked. When I looked at the previous challenges, I was surprised to see that 9 out of 10 of the top placed photos had light streaks in them.

When you read the description, it says: Use a non-stationary light source (for example, a moving flashlight in your hand) as the primary method of illuminating your subject in a creative manner.

To me, this is about controlling exactly where you place your light, not about making designs with the light itself. The idea behind painting with light is to control exactly where your light goes. Here's the first painting with light photo I did (2 years ago for the skin challenge):

This allowed me to place the light exactly where I wanted it. I shined the light on the fronts of the onions individually, but then I went behind and shined the light into each individual skin, so that I could get them to glow. It was a 20 second exposure in a completely dark room -- no other lighting other than a moving flashlight.

When you're using a flashlight, there's really no "just sorta lighted". The light source is so small, you need to move it all around to really light the scene. There's a definite art to doing it well.

Maybe a top 10 finish? That'd be great. Really surprised there were only 52 entries.

nB,

i immediately thought the same thing when i saw the challenge announced, but then went back and looked at the past iterations and saw a lot of really nice "selective" lighting shots... so i expanded my thinking and "painted" my entry with light, as opposed to making the light the subject itself.

I thought some of the shots used stationary lighting but it was hard to tell. I didn't want to give a lower score for a fine shot so I just moved on without voting on an image that I questioned.

I really like the look of a "painted" shot. I don't think the light needs to be in the shot or part of the shot, but I look for obvious high lights that would be hard to reproduce with a static light source.

*sigh*

I guess I shouldn't have paid attention to the challenge description, and shouldn't have been so subtle about it.

"In your face" obviously would have worked a lot better :-(

I didn't enter this one (thank goodness).

This is probably the highest I've ever scored a challenge:
Stats: You have rated 52 of 52 images (100%) in this challenge.
You have given an average score of 6.8269.

There is exceptional work in this Painting with Light Challenge. Nicely done, all who entered.

Yarr there be some stormy harsh voting in these lit photo waters.
Seems folks are interpreting the challenge concept differently than eachother and laying down the punishment/props as such.

Oh well, good job EVERYONE!!!

This thing has been over and under 6.0 so many times, I've lost count. I have a feeling it's could come down to the last vote tomorrow might to determine which way it goes.

what great work was done here. i'm so glad i didn't vote on my first pass, but had a chance to watch the posted "night lighting video", had a greater appreciation for "a moving light source" and what could be done with it. really nice work everyone.
