If they could make amazing shots with the equipment they had then, I'm sure they could make amazing shots with the equipment we have today.

As far as sales, I'm not sure since there are so many more people taking pictures these days.

Successful at taking awesome pictures, yes.
Successful at selling awesome pictures, who knows?

I don't think it matters much if you can take awesome pictures these days.

A more to-the-point question would be, "If Adams and Cartier-Bresson were starting out today, would still photography be their medium of choice?"

I mean, both of these men were brilliant, and did ground-breaking work. But I suspect they'd have been brilliant ground-breakers in any activity to which they cared to devote themselves...

Well Bresson based his work around a decisive moment so I think he would probably stick with stills and no body wants a watch a movie about a mountain.

I actually lay in bed at night because I can't sleep thinking about things like this haha.

If Adams was 19 years old today, then who would've invented the Zone system? Or where would photography be today if the Zone system had never been heard of? If nobody had ever heard of the decisive moment?

I was worried the end of the sentence was going to be "...had a love child." :)

I'd say most photographers haven't heard of the zone system.

You have a point there. But the people who design cameras have. And the photogs who know & use the Zone system do more to influence the game of photography than those who have not. Don't you think?

Yes but the people who design cameras make digital cameras and it weren't really created for that; or rather they weren't really created for the zone system.

I think the public want cheap and instant these days and the press want celebrity so where does that leave brilliance? Where would the next Don mcCullin publish his pictures? The papers wont print them.
Who cares about somebody jumping over a puddle taken by the next Cartier-Bresson if there not falling into the puddle and famous?

It would probably be a military wedding.

To go back to the start of this thread: sure, they would! In my opinion time hasn't changed. Have an idea, go for it, fail and eventually you will succeed :)

In today's world it's more like:

1. Steal an idea
2. Go for it, but use some ridiculously expensive equipment or unnecessary technique.
3. Market the crap out of it.
4. Fail? Repeat 3, but this time focus it all on your completely unnecessary equipment or technique.
5. Success

So to get back to the start of this thread, they probably wouldn't.

That's kind of irrelevant, though; regardless of whether or not the latest generation are aware of it, the creation of the Zone System was one of the seminal events in the development of photography. Zone System is where we started understanding the medium empirically and applying that knowledge to the creation of technically superior images. Adams' influence on the development of photography and imaging technology in general would be hard to overstate.

Without AA, the zone system, or something similar would have still come about, just as would the assembly line without Henry Ford. Things may be a little different and things may have come a bit later, but they would have come.

If, by chance, they did choose to be into photography, they'd likely be at the forefront, not merely using existing techniques. AA, for example, would have probably been using HDR long before the rest of us. In a way, he did.

Would they be successful? Most likely, but their work would be much different than that we see now. There is a good chance they'd be into even more advanced fields such as medical or deep space imaging.
