OK, so I want my flash off my camera. I don't want it tethered because I want to shoot with some distance and outside. I want to use non-ebay-cheap brand stuff just in case.

However, I'm having a bit of a hard time understand what it is I need to buy to make things work?

Is it: MiniTT1 for on the camera to trigger a flash on a FlexTT5?

Yes..

One MiniTT1 on your camera and a FlexTT5 on each flash.

Or you can step up to the Plus II's which are tranceivers. They can each transmit or receive depending on how you set them up including groups. You still need one as the transmitter on the camera and additional ones for each flash set to receive.

Or you can go all the way and get their MultiMAX system.

I thought the 1D Mark IV was like the 7D in that you can use the built in flash as a trigger.

I use my built in flash on my 7D to fire my 580EX II when it's off camera. I can either fire the 580 alone or balance it with the built in flash etc.

For TTL other than a system like my 7D/580EX II setup the Pocket Wizards are one of the best solutions. Some of the cheaper wireless triggers only work manually and don't support TTL. Just something to consider.

1Dm4 doesn't have a popup flash.

I see that a pair of PocketWizard Plus II Transceivers are cheaper, I just don't see how one would attach to a flash? Is via cable?

I see now...you need a PC sync cord which my 430ex ii doesn't have.

Oh, that's right...no pop up flash on the high end. Shows you that the 7D is as high as I've ever gone. LOL.

You can get a hotshoe to pc adapter to use the 430EX II with the Plus II's.

Something like this.

Just Google it...you'll find them out there.
