Okay... I'm in. I couldn't miss this one, though I doubt I'll be much of a threat to anyone with my entry. I see it more as paying homage to a truly inspirational photographer/guy here on DPC.

Ben, Just want to let you know this has been in my top 2 exciting challenges I've participated in, the other being the "Fine Arts" challenge.

I think we should pay homage to jagar next, but then again we might all have to travel to Europe to do that one. haha.

I wish we could have more time for these "In the style of" challenges!

This one has been no different than any other one I have tried to do. I wanted to do a decent job out of respect for the artist (very much the case here).
I spent a couple of days hoping to find a model for a shot- always a waste of time in my case...
Then I spent another couple of days thinking of something that wouldn't require a model...
Then the weather didn't work for a couple of days...

Last night as I was about to leave work, weather conditions were looking good for a shoot. Then some problems came up with my stupid job as usual, and I had to work three hours late- damn! I went and shot in half dark anyway and of course it didn't workout :(

Who knows if the weather will improve for one last evening to shoot tonight, but I will likely be stuck in the office anyway...

I will probably have to sit this one out. I suppose I would always want more time for artist specific challenges, but I sure wish we could have two weeks to complete them. I can't be the only one who feels this way?

100% agree with you. I think the last Fine Arts was a two week challenge.

I personally would love it if we had the Sunday/Monday (depends on location when these are eg rollover for me is Monday morning) challenge for members as weekly, the Tuesday/Wednesday challenge as weekly, then the Thursday/Friday challenge as a two week challenge. There could still be a new challenge every Thursday/Friday, just the shooting/submission period would be 2 weeks.

So you are not alone in that feeling!

+1 This would be an excellent challenge topic. However, I have no idea where in Chicago I could go to capture the feel of the settings and characters in his images.

Thanks Sarah, I somehow feel better knowing somebody out there understands my frustration :)
You might be on to something having regular two week challenges. The "In the style of challenges" require more time especially. But for people like me who have no choice but to work way too much it would be a chance to participate more regularly. I often can't make time to shoot for challenges despite having some good ideas- or so I think :P

Definitely, we learn much more and its far more interesting.

+1 yes I agree wholeheartedly. DPC is old enough & many members have been around long enough to have very impressive portfolios, well worth studying. Attempting to emulate someone else's style can really stretch your legs.

Yeah, actually, he just sent me a first class ticket to join him for the Tour de France when it passes through his town. :)

Seriously, I think you are right. I would love to see this type of topic once per month, or maybe even as a month long side challenge. The idea I was going to present after this challenge ended was based on an off hand comment from posthumous (leave it to Don to spawn a new process of stretching ourselves)...his comment to me was that we a are a mutual mentor society. With that in mind, I would love to see a two week challenge or a month long side challenge based on a member's vision/style/process/etc. The last person "studied" will have the challenge and pleasure of paying it forward by choosing the next member. And yes, jagar was on my short list for the challenge suggestion! He certainly has inspired me to shoot more candids and street recently. I certainly don't think we will run out of photogs anytime soon. Anyway, my intention was to post this as a challenge suggestion. Any thoughts on requesting two, three, or four weeks? One week is too short IMO.

+1

That is an excellent idea and builds a lot of community.
One week is too short. 3 weeks would be the best in my opinion.

Ben "le tour" has been and gone, next year if it comes this way i'll send you some tickets.

These types of challenges arouse lots of interest and take longer to think about, so i agree and think one week is not enough, two weeks sounds good to me.

Although i've probably made a terrible job of interpreting Ben's style, i totally and utterly enjoyed trying and i know i'll takeaway more from this challenge than most challenges, so thanks Ben for having such a cool style.

Ben, nice idea. 2 weeks seems optimal to me.

Splendid idea. And as a personal favor, can we do the jagar inspired challenge asap (i.e. While I am in France?). Just kidding.

Not many hours left. I can't wait to see everyone's entries. Thanks Ben for your post on 7-11 concerning your creative process. As for shooting, do you use a tripod on your close up shots?

Ben, your style is so far out of my comfort zone but I wanted to try it anyway....and I liked it!
Will you have time to comment on the images that evoke your "huh" response? If so, I hope mine is one of them. :-)

Ben is a tripod. Cool and steady.

No, really, let's hear his answer...

OK, I went out today and did some more shots. I think I have one that works. This one might just be mediocre and middle of the pack kind of shot. The first one was absolutely a brown contender. I'll have to wait for the outtakes.

Brian got it right! ;)

I always use a tripod for my seascapes (5D2 is more weather resistant than advertised) and any long exposure regardless of location. Also use one when shooting with a pinhole, except when I want a a lot of blur and/or grain. Then I turn up the ISO until I get a shutter speed in the 1/10th or faster range. Same goes for shooting with a 10 stop filter. My lens I use it with is 25mm so slow shutter speeds can be used.

Entered and happy! So I'll competing with a lot of other "brown" entries :)

Sorry to break it to all you brown boys, but I am also in, so the default place is taken. I have a couple of light tan McArthur park summer alternatives - just help yourself to as many as you like before they melt:

Oh, no no no you silly people...I will be receiving the brown ribbon for this challenge!! :P
I will then place my photo on my profile page as I love it! By saying those very words out loud...my photo is now doomed forever!

I love the idea of a mentor challenge, but think it might work best as a month-long side challenge. Same everything except not one of the main challenges. The "honoree" would pick the winners as well as the next honoree, and determine the editing rules.

oh that there were just a bspurgeon plugin to create my entry... but nay, i am left to my own devices ;-\

I entered.

I think I'm definitely going to be in the top 10% ...racing for the brown. I had fun shooting though, so even if I tank, it was worth it. Please, please, please don't be offended by my butchering in your name.
