The photo has to reflect the bands Name? or it can be pretty much any photo you want to take?

Pretty much any photo that you would expect see on an album. It doesn't have to reflect the band's name though, that is too difficult... |

Wonder how many DPC White Albums we will have when the deadline is approaching and panic sets in?
:)

Your challenge is two-fold: first, come up with a three-word name for the band to explain to interviewers what "DPC" stands for, and second, photograph something appropriate for their debut album cover. Be sure and title your submission the 3 words you came up with for the band. (For example: "Deranged Primitive Cantaloupe".)
Sounds like the photo can be what you want to go along with the band/album theme.

Ah, but it also says:
photograph something appropriate for their debut album cover
which implies to me that the photograph should be appropriate given the name of the band you come up with on your own. I personally won't be voting an album cover that features a beautiful Florida sunset and just some random band name (like "Demented Pornographic Crackheads") very highly... to me, the challenge is combining the two (title and photograph) to come up with the "complete package".

I woke up this morning with a clear vision in my mind of what I want for this challenge ... now I just have the Impossible task of creating it.
Hardest part i think is coming up with a band name that fits DPC... but i got one i like so im going with it..

I thought I had some ideas, but I found that this is harder than it seems, as I keep reading the rules, I keep thinking in my head that the Band name and the photograph taken should be somewhat similar. Poses a more challenging threat now...
Have the perfect band name and no way to represent it, unless someone dropped an A bomb in the middle of the ocean for me... lol
Back to the drawing board!

I wonder if we are allowed to apply any effects to the text we are allowed to use. I mean effects like a little blur or a simple shadow. |

LOL!!! I'd probably rate it pretty high. The total "random-ness" of it alone is exactly something a band would do these days :) But I see what you're saying. |

I don't see why not. The blur, or drop shadow, would IMO be considered part of the text, not part of the image. As always, if the text becomes the subject of the image, i.e. crowds out the "photography", it would be a problem.
I don't think many would consider such an image, the voters will certainly not like it.

but in the real world, this is not how album covers are designed - how many sleeves of world-famous rock bands reflect their name sakes? i've never seen a beetle creepy crawly or VW) on a beatles album, traversing rocks on a rolling stones album, any radios on a radiohead album, or any pink fellas called floyd on a pink floyd album (unless the inflatable pig was called floyd...). i personally think it would be unfair to mark someone down because their album sleeve didn't include any, say, deeply patriotic chickens.
I like this challenge, and am looking forward to it. but personally, i think it would have been more preferable to chose a REAL band, and then design an album sleeve to suit that genre...
on a kind of related note, should the submission be square? or have the same proportions as a cardboard digipak? |

I agree -- but I never said the title of the picture (the band name, in this case) had to be a "literal description" of the album cover. All I said was that I think the name and album cover need to be appropriate, as the challenge description says. Like I said in my previous example, I wouldn't expect a beautiful sunset as the album cover for a band named "Demented Pornographic Crackheads". There are plenty of other images which I would consider "appropriate" for a band with such a moniker however.
Also, it is common (although not necessarily a rule) that a band's debut album is "self-titled", meaning there is no specific album title (the challenge description does specifically state "debut album").

So am I to understand from your reply that in your opinion, I shouldn't be allowed to reply to Jeremy's post and express my opinion?
I fail to see what point you are trying to make. Obviously, any time you express a thought you are expressing an opinion. If Jeremy didn't want opinions on how to interpret the challenge, why did he make the post in the first place? |

ah, right, so your suggesting that we need to come up with a name that suggests a genre by it's very name... so a Death Punk Crackwhores name doesn't suggest "fluffy bunnies", whereas Dainty Pink Cardigans might...? hmmm. a bit more thought needs to go into band naming methinks... i guess suggesting a band might use cutesy images as irony should really not be considered? |

If the titles suggested so far in this thread are any indication, this is going to be a very interesting challenge! |

Just expressing my opinion. =] Obviously, you are free to submit whatever you want. Heck, you can even title your photo "I'm ignoring the challenge details" and you won't get disqualified. But I'm not saying you will score well, though...
But even Cartman knew how to take an "appropriate" photo for the self-titled debut album of his band "Faith + 1" in the episode "Christian Rock Hard"...
