You can get a step-up ring and magifying filters...in my case a 1x, 2x, 4x, and 10x. The 4x is the most used one, though I have got pretty good results with it coupled to the 10x too...here's an example.
Ok, so nobody will mistake it for roz but it got lots of decent detail on a pretty tiny bug, so I'm happy with it. |
Indeed- Susan brings up another approach, which is close-up filters. I've got a set of the Hoya version, and they work pretty well.
and
The issue I had with them is reflections/flare at some times, but overall they did work pretty well. I would recommend the Sigma 150 2.8 as an affordable option with great reach, as well. I got mine pretty reasonably from another DPC'er. Also, if you've already got a 28-70, they work pretty well with an extension ring for macro work.

Depends on who you ask... You'll risk a few more hits with a spider, either for the fear factor, or the "it's an arachnid" thing... Still, I hope to see a few. :) |

While a spider may not be an insect, it certainly is a "bug". a. To annoy; pester. |

If I can find it on BugGuide, it's a bug :-) |

Since bug can mean pretty much any tiny critter, I'd think spiders count. |

Phylum: Arthropoda
While my entry will probably be an insect, I think the challenge description is written broadly enough to be inclusive of other bugs, not six legged.

Ho man! I got my shot in 5 pictures when I thought it would take me a few hundred attempts. :) |

And knowing your past bug shots you̢۪ve probably got a ribbon winner too.
I spent several hours at various lakes but being winter in Sydney and a very windy week I found absolutely nothing to shoot. I then saw a bee in my own backyard so I raced in to get my camera. Half an hour later another bee turned up and I got this shot
I was going to enter it but I managed to get another bug shot that I felt was better composed and have entered that instead. I̢۪m curious though; did anyone else in Sydney manage to find insects? I can̢۪t believe how hard it was.

Okay great. Now I'm in the bittersweet position of having dozens of potential submissions. So of course I'm second-guessing the one I've entered. Buh.
We should make an outtake thread at some point. :)

The rain finally let up enough for me to go out on a 3 hour nature trail Sunday morning. Was slightly worried after about an hour and not seeing much, then I hit the jackpot and got a few shots I LOVED! I ended up with an amazing shot that isn't a bug, but might fare well in the Freestudy...we shall see :-)
I don't expect to do great, but just happy I didn't miss this one |

How important do you think the "in its natural environment" phrase is? If there is a man made object in the frame is it DNMC? |

I think that REALLY depends on the bug and the object. For example, if you have a ladybug on a screw, and the composition is super pleasing, I'm going to bet you'd be just fine - if however, it's a dragonfly on the edge of a particularly boring and unattractive sign... Well... My guess is that it won't do nearly as well. :) |

If it's up to me, I'd say as long as a bug can be found there, that's it's natural environment. :) |

I am so disappointed. I love shooting bug macros and macros in general but since this challenge was announced we have had strong winds, For 2 days we had winds gusting to 100km/h and I even lost some branches off my trees and shrubs. Impossible to get a decent bug macro. I tried a couple of days but wasn't very successful. I have one more day to try but the wind is supposed to be the same as today, 50km/h. Way too windy. And there are a ton of dragonflies and damselflies around all the ponds too. :(
I bet on Wednesday the winds die down. |

Sounds like my luck, normally. Here's hoping you catch a break.
I can't complain though, because I am *in*! Holy cats, first time since September of 2009. Now *that's* embarrassing! |

Yes. You might be able to find some way to make it illegal, but generally - yes. The biggest issue this presents is the rarity of a white vignette, which may make your image identifiable now that you've posted this comment. |
