The How-to geek frequently has well written and illustrated photography how-to's. Worth checking now and then. They posted this one today, and I thought it would be particularly helpful.
What is a Histogram, and How Can I Use it to Improve My Photos?

| Thanks for helping unravel the mysteries of the histogram. Now, I really need to start shooting in RAW to take advantage of the information in the histogram article. That's something I have been putting off for a few challenges. |

That's a good, straight-forward explanation, with plenty of good visuals. The examples shown are really good. The only point I'd add is that many cameras, by default, show only a luminosity histogram, and that's what they show when they refer to the camera histogram. Most newer cameras *do* have the option of showing an RB histogram, which is more informative. It will show you when one channel is blown, which is very important. I *always* recommend that folks enable that option, and learn to really use the histogram on the camera.
