Lesson #1: hats off to HCB
05/27/2011 02:00:20 PM · #52
I skipped this challenge because I thought it unlikely that it was possible to get something worthy of the master with the restrictions of the editing rules. In voting on the challenge I was impressed. There are certainly a handful of images that were worthy of HCB, and I gave an average score of 5.8571. The few clearly posed shots really stood out from the crowd of fluid movement and fleeting moments. What ever the advantages in composition, they lost the feeling of capturing a small slice of time. On the whole, well done folks.

You have rated 98 of 98 images (100%) in this challenge.
You have commented on 3 images (3%) in this challenge.
You have given an average score of 5.5510.

Two 8s and eight 7s, some 6 and the twenty-eight 5s.

None lower. One of my 8s may go up to 9 or 10.

EDIT: just changed my voting scale. Everyone will be moving up later.

Thanks.

FWIW...if I find a potential subject looking my way, I *suddenly* spot an interesting bird, UFO or what have you in the distance above and behind them....then I track and fire like mad after the imaginary object. That tends to help. Or chimp the shot you just got of them, wrinkle your nose and then either actually delete it or lock it.

Also, if you're tall, get low to the ground; I'm 5'10 and a good trick I learned from my 6'2 bf Magnumphotography. Sit or crouch. And that way you can get some interesting POVs, too. Most buildings have alcoves etc, you can stand in them and relax (and stay dry if the weather's bad).

In terms of the few times I have someone actually tell me to not take their picture, I apologize and just say that I thought they had a fascinating look to them, and they often do. (However I don't delete the photos I've already taken unless I choose to, but I don't continue to shoot them). That smooths some feathers. If someone's really blatantly trying to hide their face from you, take the hint and lower your camera, turn away, or find something else to shoot.

Hope this helps.

I have a similar tack, but I try to compliment something they have chosen to wear rather than their look. They chose that hat, coat, whatever, and if you admire it, they kinda like that, even if they get uncomfortable having their picture taken.

I like to shoot a few frames, then if they look uncomfortable, approach them and tell them I love their (insert clothing choice or pet here) and am taking images of everyone in that area for imaginary project X (the faces of 14th street) that is for my personal hobby use. I show them the image I got caught taking, to show I am not trying to make them look bad, or catch them picking their nose. Then ask if they would mind if I took a few more. If people like the shots I have them write down their email, and I photograph that and send them a shot or two. People often resent you sniping images, but will rarely decline being photographed if you talk with them just a bit.

Well, by 'look', I generally do mean their entire ensemble, not just a facial expression, as my previous post may have implied :-) One subject caught me shooting her and her companion, and as they approached I noticed an absolutely amazing tattoo on her arm - the gears of a motorcycle becoming the gears and mechanism on a bicycle - and not only got shots of it but a bit of a backstory, too :-)

My previous score was 5.58 with 107 votes. So what does that make this vote, Anyone know?

This one is heading into the realm of new PB for me, but in all honesty, its one of my worse shots and I'm a bit disappointed in it. I think the voters have been extremely generous. It was a good challenge, but I ended up yielding and submitting something that feels more stylistically similar (tones and contrast) rather than being able to nail a strong composition and subject.

I did get out of my comfort zone, and I'll try to do more of it... I think I would have enjoyed this challenge a bit more with some basic editing.

Germaine gets a SpiffyPointâ„¢ for leaving the anticipated critique. Redeemable at all dives that accept SpiffyPointsâ„¢. (Not sure where any are, though.) Fortunately, the rest of my image seems to have enough interest to mostly overcome the critiqued aspect.

Everyone should have at least one comment now. And in commenting on all of 'em, I do realize that my own entry is lacking in some of what I was looking for.

One excellent comment. Not sure what my image is lacking, but it's obviously lacking something. Disappointing results. Onward!

This isn't quite the peak, but pretty close. Might have to ask for some input when this one is put to rest.

It's been a busy 3 day weekend and I babysat till 9 tonight, so I never got around to commenting except for a very few. I feel bad since I got a bunch, so if anyone would like one after the challenge, PM me. I've got tomorrow off from babysitting. My score is way higher than I expected, and I'm quite happy!

I would like one. I have only two and they are both from folks who saw it before the challenge. So my picture is feeling a definite lack of love. Or attention. Or much of anything at all. Which says alot, now that I think about it!
