I'm wondering if anyone has experience with the Speedlite Transmitter ST E2?
Can a flash be used to trigger another flash? I have a Speedlite 430EX II and would get another one if it could be set up to trigger the one I have. Just wondering if this is possible and what the benefits/cons there are to working this way? I see a lot of knock off transmitters on ebay for 20 or dollars. Anyone have luck with these? |

I got a set of Cowboy Studio transmitter and 2 recivers and a Vivitar 285HV for around $110 a few weeks ago. Pretty basic with no TTL possible, but if you are willing to work in manual, they work just fine and you cant beat the price.
I don't own the 430, but I'm pretty sure that it will work in optical slave mode and can be triggered by the pop up flash or any other flash. |

* A 430 cannot be master in an eTTL conversation - would need a 580 or 550 or as you say an ste2 (or one of the eTTL 3rd party flashes - I heard there is a 3rd party ste2 now as well).
* The cheap radio triggers are not eTTL (at least I don't know cheap ones that are).
* The radio triggers that ARE eTTL tend to be real money.
* Radiopoppers and maybe some mid level triggers will allow some remote control over the power output as they are doing it not the flash but they are still not eTTL. |

Radiopoppers (PX, but not Junior) support eTTL and power control fully, just like Pocketwizard Flex/Mini. They transmit the eTTL commands into radio. What this means is that you require something to make the optical pulses (IE- a body (like the 7D) that has commander or an ST E2). Basically they increase the reliability and range of the optical flash control system. The PX will also function as manual control only without a specific commander system (no need for ST-E2), but at this point, if you're just looking for manual control, the Junior is more feasible.
The ST E2 will trigger your 430 and other Canon eTTL flashes. The limitations are the same as any other optical system- limited distance, dependence on line of sight*, and decreased range/reliability in bright light.
*Sometimes you'll not need much of any line of sight, and sometimes it must be direct. Case by case.
