I know the issue of photographing people in public has come up several times here, so I thought I'd pass along this news story that our local TV station aired today:

Experts Weigh In On Privacy Rights In High-Tech World

Just thought you might want to see that in case you doubted the legality of photographing people in public.

The article seems to have facts correct, but the wording is still biased in a way that portrays anyone with a camera in a negative manner.

Yeah, it does have that bias in it, making people sympathetic to those who happen to be photographed in public. I thought the video report was also on there, but it's not. The reporter was actually walking up to people with his cell phone and recording them right off the bat to tick them off before he interviewed them about it.

Typical of TV news. Everything is a threat and a way to make you scared. It's ridiculous.

some one sent me this entertaining-in-a-weird-way video. as i had never been to that site before, i checked out a few randomly related, suggested videos and thought, holy crap!

there is absolutely no privacy any more. anyone of us is only a slip away from going viral...

no wonder the art and profession of photography is dying. the only thing that matters is whether or not you can capture video to contribute to the darwin awards.

it's only a matter of time before the p&s manufacturers integrate the live instant-sharing technology that's in smartphones into their cameras. i'll bet within five years, every camera will have instant publishing capabilities.

think about this...

150 years ago, a horseback rider would carry dispatches that would be read in a public square
100 years ago, daily and weekly newspapers carried stories sent across a wire
75 years ago, radio waves carried breaking news
50 years ago, televisions were just starting to take root
30 years ago, cable television started to compete with satellite transmission
15 years ago, the internet starting gaining public acceptance
10 years ago, cell phones became the mainstream form of communication
5 years ago, digital cameras became affordable for anyone who wanted one

and where are we headed? into a completely unfiltered world where everything that anyone says or does is going to be instantly available to anyone else in the world. it's going to be like an unending tsunami in your head.

To that you might just say that the tsunami's always been there and the only thing you control (however imperfectly) is your head.

Yes but if your camera is online like your phone is & what you shoot goes to youtube (for example) then even if the police take your camera you still have your pictures. That could be cool. From watching Jay Leno on the sidewalk, I think people are pretty good at controlling their head. Willful ignorance will always be with us.

âHistory is a heat. It is the heat of accumulated information and accumulated complexity. As our culture progresses we find that we gather more and more information and that we slowly start to move almost from a fluid to a vaporous state as we approach the ultimate complexity of a social boiling point. I believe that our culture is turning to steam-Alan Moore

basically, we're nearing the point where our collective sanity evaporates.
