Where do you draw the line between soft focus, and out of focus?

Huh? I think they are one and the same... but..
"Soft focus" is normally intentional and an artistic effect and
"Out of focus" MAY imply that the viewer thought the area of question should have been sharper.
Examples: "Your soft focus adds a dramatic feel." or
"The Out of focus area on the left is really a bummer."
Best to just ask the person who made the statement I suppose....

...well, I kind of equate soft focus to hazy, dreamy, fanciful...and out of focus to...well...ugly. Soft focus looks intentional, out of focus looks like a mistake. Who knows??? LOL

What about the people that intentionally shoot something out of focus, thinking they are making it "soft"? :-)
