I thought I had a good photo too, not a ribbon winner, but a good one nontheless. I'm not doint terribly bad, just about average for me.
After looking through the entries and seeing a couple that did not have a single word in them I asked myself: Do people purposely enter photos they KNOW do not meet the challenge according to the challenge description? I'm usually pretty relaxed about the whole thing and I've submitted a couple of things that some people didnt think met the challenge, but if the challenge description says you have to have WORDS on your photograph, why enter something that doesnt have a single word, or even a single letter? Just my thoughts.

11 Comments? Wow, I also have a score of 5.8 right now with 60 votes but I have no comments. You just never know with DPC anymore.

I am very disappointed. I really thought I would break the 6-barrier with this one, but I'll be lucky if I break the 5-barrier. I don't understand, I agree with Bruchen that the words should have a special function in the picture, add something to it, and I see a lot of pictures that don't meet that criterium. (I see a lot of very nice ones too, I already voted before I looked at my score). But I already got at least one 1 and I'm pretty sure I don't deserve that. I meet the challenge, in a creative way. Maybe the picture could be better, maybe it's not your taste, but a 1 is really a smack in the face. I NEVER give out ones, (only recently to people who submit just a flower in a challenge that is about something completely different).

Well, at least the comments I get are nice. In freedom my score sucks and my comments suck. In selective desaturation my score sucked, but I didn't mind at all because the comments were so nice and helpful. But I had such high hopes of this picture.

And now I already have this great submission for balance (or at least I thought so until now), think I should work on my expectations for that one...

As long as it doesn't go down from here I'm OK with it. :o)

I'm feeling the same way, my score is a measly 4.04, when I made it to 59/220 on Advertisement. I really liked my entry, though it's not as good as my ad, which I though deserved a top ten spot. I am annoyed that I could be at a 4 with 49 votes but no comments at all. I have a creative image, I saw no similar images, and I checked my brightness on a mac and pc screen. My only thought is that people for some reason don't realize what the picture is of.

I think I get so many comments because the pics I enter seem to be controversial or humourous.

I'm disappointed with the votes, but very happy with my pic. It sure is hard to please some people.

If I'd re-taken this one I wonder how well it would have done:

How strange that you mention that...as soon as I saw the challenge, that is the first image that popped into my mind...love that shot! :o)

That's very fulfilling - thanks. Actually, I can't re-shoot it now as they've painted it out. Shame.

I also am not doing as well as i thought. oh well.

I do think it strange that people are taking pictures of walls with words on them or signs with landscape shots...the challenge was to use words creatively in your photo....using a sign, or taking a picture of a building with words doesnt make any sense...

but its just a shot of a wall?? how does that meet the challenge requirments?

Mark - it's an interesting comment you've made, but why do you say this? You see only a wall? Are you being confrontational? Or is it that you feel it's not a set-up so therefore no effort is made?

You might just be the reason that some good shots in this challenge might be 'Mark-ed' down!

No...and im sorry it does seem controversial. I just don't see the challenge as being one that describes the ability to find a wall with some words on it, or find a cool looking building with words on it...

I looked at it to be a creative use of words in a picture. Using a wall or a building or a sign doesnt seem to fit on what the challenge was supposed to be...but then again, thats what this is all about...people seeing things differently...everyone has their "take" and that is what makes things special...I was just commenting that I didnt understand how finding a cool wall with words fit the challenge....even if you just painted the wall for this challenge, it still doesnt seem to fit for me...

My score is now over 6 and I still have 0 comments. Not sure what to make of that. I guess it's well executed but boring. hehe

I was too off the wall and will assume last place if all goes well. LOL voters.

Fair enough Mark. I think it may be good to leave an open mind for creative observation though. It may jsut be something that others don't see. :)

LOL. I think he simply edited his post after later review. Calm down everyone, your low scores are in good company.

I go through and vote on everything first. Then I go away for a day (well not totally away, I have to neurotically check my score every hour or so)... then I come back and look through every photo again, adjusting score as I see fit, and commenting. I find that if I comment on the second go, I'm more apt to "get" the picture, once it's had time to mull about in that vacant space of my mind. :)

Allyrellia, i do the same thing.

I suspect others do to...i notice that in the last hour of a challenge, my score go nuts......it can change + or - 1 whole point...

im just sad about the differences in white balance on computer screens, i didnt realise my entry to Words was so dark until I had submitted it, and I had gotten too busy to re-shoot it before it closed :( oh well.
I just don't get how people didn't understand the need for preferably more than one word and also, using the word as part of the description.
There seem to be a lot of random words in these photos, that the photos themselves don't back up - I thought the point was the *meaning* of the words should be incorporated into the picture too?
ahh well.. im only averaging a 4.8 atm so what would I know.
07/14/2004 07:08:30 PM · #49
I think the point of the challenge was to take a good photo with words in it. Anything else and you're probably reading too much into it.
07/14/2004 08:13:16 PM · #50
Lot of opic has no words and I also notice pictures with products + the FLOWERS men... I have not Idea how much give to this pics? some of them are very well done. but I think a picture with the coke can on it is no meeting the chalenge. What do u guys think? I got start voting on those soon.
