I absolutely hated each day I walked into to the place, but everytime I saw her photo it would make my day shine. I wished that I had the capability of capturing the growth of our life together, she reminds me of how beautiful it all is. I had cameras but I was always taking those quick snapshots that had no real umph about them. Well anyhow, I started taking pictures of her and I with my 35mm film camera and she absolutely hated every picture she was in, so I puchased the Fuji 7000 so I could really learn to take photos without the expense of processing film so that one day I will take a good enough photo for her to see how beautiful she is. It saddens me that she can not see herself the way that I see her. While trying to perfect my techinques I have learned to see life in a different way, and I want to capture as much of it as possible before I go. I guarantee a majority of them will be of her and I. She is what gives me a reason to want to wake up every morning. I love you Kally!

Oh man this is soo sweet :)

The very thing that attracted me to photography was the look of the camera, even as a small child i loved the way they looked and my mother says as a baby i used to love having cameras pointed at me (not too many pics left of me as a child though) then by the age of 3-4 i had to have my own plastic camera and would follow my father everywhere. There was never an actual photographer in our family or in fact nobody of artistic tendencies, I was the first but chose the music world for my life but I still could not get away from cameras, I used to have a collection of very old cameras including a very old alluminium Italian camera that took 120 film and a few older twin lens cams as well as a couple of newer 35mm cams. Sadly during my moving from house to house, town to town they all got lost, stolen, broken. I still love to have cameras around me and taking pictures is the most relaxing time for me even though Im not very good I do it for the enjoyment and relaxation of it all, I have started a new collection of old cameras again too none of which i will ever use to take pics with but will display in my recording studio...

I love digital cameras very handy and photography has been a very important part of keeping me sane through my strange life, allthough i have to say that during the moments of sadness when i needed comfort it was my guitar that was my best friend not my camera.

I was attracted to Photography as childhood due to build of nikon manual slr like f2. silver and black build.

What really pushed me was , when i was growing up, i used to visit a local photographer who was and still is very good in portraits. His portraits were amazing and are still amazing.

He really inspired me and whenevr i need to setup a benchmark i tend to always remember his work

My profile pretty much will tell you why I picked up a camera almost 2 years ago. It filled a place left when I lost my best friend.

I have always taken pictures but never seriously until 11 years ago when we had the honor of adopting a baby boy. The agency required us to send monthly photos to the birthmother. I wanted to send more than a snapshot. I wanted her to see the beautiful gift she'd given us, to confirm her decision that she'd made the right choice by see a happy healthy boy growing month by month. 3 years later we were given a beautiful daughter and the cycle of monthly pictures to the birthmother started over again. Now I send both birthmothers a DVD of photos from the year as a Christmas present.

I found a couple of old Life magazines (late 50's, early 60's) in my grandmother's basement when I was about 10 years old and have been fascinated by photography ever since. I have always been drawn to black and white documentary style and grew to appreciate fine are black and white. Unfortunately, my photographic skill has never matched my love of the photography, but I keep working at it.

Aye, same with me (1 year ago), yet I had done a tiny bit of film photography before my profile began, but not much. I started for the fun of it, like mentioned earlier, I'm attracted to electronic gadgets. A camera was just more complex, and had much cooler results.

I picked a camera when I was 13 and spent all my money that worked for during a Summer to buy one..Nikon SLR...my dad and I spent time together learning how to use one.....then, I broke away from it....I then discovered girls a few years later......After, trying to figure out women for nearly 20, I gave up...and then picked up a digital camera and found my true love....Photograghy! However, still pondering about women in the mean time...:)

When I was about 15 my cousin and got a huge collection of National Geographic magazines from my neighbour He said he didnt want them anymore.
My cousin and I just fell in love with those magazines - the photographs in them were unamtched by any othe magazine we had ever seen.
The pictures jus seemed so cool at the time.
We had no idea at the time that they were done by pro photogaphers - but we wanted to take photographs just like that.
We got an old point and shoot which was lying around the house and started taking mushrooms and all sorts of things.
Been in love wih photography since then.

I also have always taken a lot of pictures at work, either of my students, the school, functions, and the like. ... I'm still working at it, but thanks to the things I've learned so far, I have made improvements and at least have decent snapshots for our family albums now.

That's alot like me Laurie! I always loved to snap away with photos (took a class in JH), but not until we got a digital camera and I could do it without fear of film developing costs, I went nuts. ^_^ Being on the yearbook staff (editor for 2 years) really helped me in my organization of photos, and also further ingrained me with my love of "journalistic" and portrait photography. I LOVE capturing someone's face/mood.

This photo: aka
really spurred me on because I realized that I COULD take better than okay photos and I wanted to take more. Heh, and he's still my favorite subject. ^_^

I've been drawing since i could use a pencil. I got my first digital camera to take photo references for me to draw later on. I guess the turning point for came when i stumbled on a digital photo website (deviantart.com for the curious ones) and i was blown away by some of the photography there, especially x-horizon //x-horizon.deviantart.com/
I am still very new to the digital photography world and would like very much to improve so here I am!

At least you're honest, hehe :)
I just picked up my dad's camera one day and started taking photos of random things. They were all abstract stuff. I enjoyed taking things and making them look different from the everyday stuff that surrounds me (I never really had much of a social life and spent most my time indoors). I started submitting to deviantART, then found DPC. DPC is what really got me hooked and it's helped me improve so much. Now DPC is my main reason for shooting, and you can look through my challenge history to see how it's helped me get better :)

I started because ... the camera has buttons on it.
I started because ... when mom took pictures they would only show the heads and the sky.
I started because ... it was fun.

My love began when my 8th grade teacher thrust a manual Nikon camera in my hands and told me to create a historical presentation of the city I live in. I had no idea how to use the thing but somehow I shot pictures of historical places and buildings and they all actually came out. She said I had an "eye" for photography. I got into a lot of trouble as a kid and had problems at home, so for someone to notice a hidden talent in me was so uplifting. I ended up pregnant at 18 so I took snapshots of the baby with a 110, posing her and changing her clothes and such, and eventually I decided to go to college. I got a Canon EOS and studied photography and computer graphic design. I ended up landing a job at a local newspaper taking a few photo assignments but mostly using photoshop to "work up" photos for the next day paper. they finally put me on as a photographer for ads and I got to shoot some spur of the moment stuff which I loved. Since then I have been freelance and sold to another newspaper frequently, and I have done some sports photos for little league teams, but I would love to open my own studio someday. I still have so much to learn - and so much to buy! Lately I have found myself learning more that I ever did in school - I am glad I found this site.

I would have to say that my interest in Photography was planted way back when I was in Middle School and had a professional sports photographer as a 'general' art teacher. Mr. Einstein introduced us to all sorts of artistic forms, but I enjoyed the short section on photography most of all.

He showed us some basic developing technics and even had a fairly large room that used to be a storage closet converted into a dark room. While I did enjoy the section, I couldn't really get into the whole film developing thing and that's why it was only a seed.

Now, with digital, the seed has sprouted and taken root. So, I am seeing where this will end up leading me.

I have owned a camera since I was a little boy, 6 or 7 years old. An uncle of mine was always taking photographs at this time, and I loved when he was showing them to me. I especially remember his creative shots of family members. He was mostly taking b&w then. When I was 6 I took my first photograph, I was trying to take a picture of a mountain near to my home. The outcome was half of the mountain with some other stuff in it that wasn't supposed to be in the picture. My uncle loved this photo and said it was great! He made the little boy very proud of his work and I think it was then my turning point was for photography. His brother, also my uncle, had photography as his hobby also. Those two uncles of mine had a huge influence on me and I followed in their footsteps when I bought my first SLR camera 1985. After that there was no turning back and it was then that I dug into photography for real and made it my main hobby as it has been ever since.

On the other hand it's the creativity in photography that I like the most. I've always been into creative stuff and this was my thing. I'm not very good in drawing or painting, so this is easier for me. The creative part of photography is the main reason for having it as my hobby, and that is most likely that really made me start photography to answer the question right.

Neat thread! I should start by saying that my parents were in their 40's when I was born, so this explains a few things. My Dad was an engineer and one of his only creative outlets was to take Ecktachrome slides -- I think he enjoyed the required precision. For some reason, he stopped shooting years before I was born, and I'll never know why because he passed away about 10 years ago, and I wish I could ask him.

So, when I was a kid, I remember my parents having slide shows for guests, and it was my favorite thing. To see pictures of places I could only imagine, to see people I had never or could never met, to see my parents when they were young, to see shiny new cars with stickers in the window that were like antiques now, to see things that someone else thought was beautiful, to see things that were important that aren't important now, to see how my parents looked so in love in the pictures but just looked bored and tired now.

I loved the "otherness" of the pictures, I loved the passion my Dad had for it, I loved how uncharacteristic of him it was to be so vibrant about it.

I guess something that keeps me shooing is how intimate it can be, and how it's so hard for me -- I'd prefer to use a super long lens and snipe shots than to get up close to someone and get the sweet image I crave. It's a growing exercise for me.

I have used a camera as long as I can remember, used my Dad's box Brownie once in a while cos I couldn't afford to have the films processed. In my teens I used the 110's and these served me thru my early twenties. Working on a farm meant money was short...and still is...so didn't really progress until 20 years ago.

Interest really took off and started spending money on different systems starting with Zenit 11 and M42 50mm lens. Then came the OM-10, OM-40, Pentax whatever model, OM-10/OM-20 and my last was a Canon EOS 650. Must have spent thousands on the full kits, then sold them off cheap.

Got into digital 5? years ago with Fujifilm DX10 and was hooked on the instant, free photos. Bought the 6900Z a couple of years ago and it works fine, but getting a bit limiting so next move will be Canon 10D or new model, could even be Nikon D70.

With 4 kids and 8 grandchildren, there have been plenty of photo opportunities over the years. 2 weddings coming up next summer! I keep a monthly photo diary of the gardens where I work, these are used for planting schemes and training. Hope to be still taking pics the day they plant me!

Photography for me has been just about forever. In the 60s & 70s, black and white with a Pentax. In the 80s when I started traveling around the planet, I dragged along a just-about-manual-everything Minolta with a fabulous 28-140 lens and it had a macro feature too. When that lens died, I cried. Eventually changed to Nikon, until digital came along. Made the switch to Canon with all those megapixels. That was a year ago. What's next? I can hardly wait.

In my family, if you didn't want your picture taken all the time, you had to be the one holding the camera..
