I've noticed that when I use one of the Nik software tools, it maintains any tweaks I make to it. How do I reset back to the neutral level of that preset? As an example, if I use one of the presets in Color Efex, but change the local contrast from the initial setting of +50 to +25, the next time I use that preset it still has that +25 setting. Other than trying to remember what it was before, how do I reset that particular preset to its initial settings? I suspect they all reset once I close Photoshop, but I'd hate to have to do that every time.

Wow...I doubt that's what's really happening unless you are saving the settings.

It does save the "very last settings" you used. So just switch to a different preset, and go back, and it should be back to the original settings.

Mind you, I only use the LR version of these--your mileage may vary. :)

Nope, it keeps the same settings, even if I use another preset. I'm working from within Photoshop. Have not yet tried anything in Lightroom, though.

On the right hand side under your filter pane you will see a "Quick Save" drop down panel. To reset the filter to default settings...click on the top option where it says "default". That will set the original values of the filter. If you make changes to the filter and you want to save them you can click below that on one of the slots and give it a name for further use.

The program retains...or has "sticky settings" as long as you don't cancel or apply the effect. What this means that you can try one preset..make changes to it, and then on the left side of the app select and entirely different filter and see how you like that. Let's say you hate it, and want the other one back. Just go back to that filter and your settings are still there...as long as you don't apply and go back to Photoshop or cancel out. Once you apply the customized filter and you're back in Photoshop..the next time you run Color Efex Pro the filter will start with the default filter settings. So, if you want to try your effect and possibly use some masking in Photoshop...but then decide you want to tweak it you will have to start from scratch unless you add your tweaks to one of the quick save spots before hand.

Hope this helps..

Yep, it retains the settings you change in any particular filter as long as you remain in the plug-in. When you exit the plug-in and return, back to default. Or, as noted, you can use the menu to return to default. What I would really like in the Nik plugins is the ability to apply multiple filters within the same session, go back and forth between them, adjust them, then do the full application when saving out of the plugin.

I guess since I run the plugins within Photoshop, I never actually "leave" to reset to the defaults. I'll check for the default option in the Quick Save panel, Dave - thanks for the tip!

You're welcome. :) When I say leave Color Efex Pro, I mean to either apply or cancel the effect and go back to Photoshop. You don't have to exit Photoshop for the defaults to reset. Whenever you're done editing in Color Efex Pro and apply the effect to the layer in Photoshop...the next time you use Color Efex Pro the presets should be back to their default values. If they aren't something fishy is going on.

That would be nice, you can create the image as a smart objects image and then at least you can go back into each one separately and make changes but it would be really cool to be able to create several input layers of filters within the plugin

Yes, that's what is happening - they aren't going back to their defaults after I apply, and I don't think it's just Color Efex. For instance, the sharpening program stays where I'd set it last, even after I've applied it, then gone on to close the picture and open another one.

I've been waiting to hear someone say how to fix this. I have the same problem.

Ok, well it must be contagious because now mine is acting the same way as yours. It wasn't all afternoon, but it is now. I will investigate it further, but might not be until tomorrow....getting tired. The user guide is really pretty useless when it comes to answering this. I never really have to read those things but I did go through it today and didn't find much of anything there in this regard. I must have changed a combination of settings around to get mine to act like yours and Penny's. LOL. Now if I just walk backwards and mumble some gibberish words I can undo it. LOL.

Yes, this would be great. I've actually seen this suggested a few times in the Nik user group on Flickr (run by the Nik team themselves). I wouldn't be at all surprised to see this feature pop in a future release, for it seems that the moderators of the group do actually listen to their customers. It's a good place to pick up all kinds of tips and hints.

.

Cool! I'll have to check that out. I've done a couple Nik webinars (they have a regular schedule) and need to do more of those, too. Powerful tools, those pluginsâ€Â¦
