I think having a lens text box to fill in when suibmitting an image will be a great addition.

I often see images on here and wonder what lens they used and will email them. Also when researching about a new lens it's handy to be able to see images taken with said lens.

Good point I agree totally it would be a nice touch if people would show the lens used. I have a D series 28-105 f3.4-4.5 and also a ED 80-200 f2.8 (super lens it really is) I need something wider and was looking at a Nikor 16-50mm f2.8 bit out of my price range for now but it does look like a beauty.

So Eddy - I see you pointing to previous threads, where lots of people say they'd love this feature, and you pop up pointing to other previous threads, where again, loads of people say they'd love this feature, and there are links from you to prior threads, where again, lots of people say they really think this would be a good idea...

How far back do you want to track this high approval rating ? :)

I figure it would be easy enough to manage. Have a box, which people can fill in if they want to, or not. Have a check box beside it for
cropped or not - or leave the label in the box as (35mm focal length or lens - please indicate if cropped or not) and let them type it in.

Either that or come up with a list of all available SLR lenses for various mounts and ask for crop info or not - but just letting people indicate the focal length and cropping seems to address all of the issues and help the large number of people who've stated they'd like the feature.

I realise you've said in the past that you support this idea, it doesn't seem like it would be a hugely difficult thing to get added to the database - and having a unique entry on the form would encourage people to actually fill that info in, rather than hoping the generic 'details' box might catch someone's attention. Whole lot harder to index on that way too.

I usually include the lens used in the photo description, but I agree it would be great to have a field for it...

Gordon: I merely pointed out the previous threads to show that (a) people have already requested this many times, (b) there are issues with using web-sized images to evaluate lens performance / focal length (since the image could be cropped to 10% of its original pixels), and (c) that it is already on the list of things for Drew & Langdon to consider implementing.

I do this mostly hoping to limit the number of redundant conversations about the same thing...

seems to me that implementing this would stop the redundant posts.

just being a smart-ass :)

Not only lens, but the actual focal length used.

This bit of info seems almost critical because, for example, f/4.0 on a 50mm lens is completely different from f/4.0 on a 300mm lens. (of course distance to subject also plays as big of factor as focal length, but that information generally isn't as readily available as the focal length)

Those who are shooting digital can generall get the focal length used for each inmage right out of the EXIF data.

Fair enough. I think pointing out that it was on the list of things 'to be done' would be more useful than pointing to all of the previous threads to let the person find that out - I had about 6 threads open very quickly following your link, to your links, to your links ...

Only redundant to those that read the 200 previous threads ;)

Thanks for showing them anyway, got a bit lost at one point but saw the side.

just add it to the description...

i noticed that i use the same lense at the same focal length lots of the time, and a have a notepad file with the specs to copy, and paste from.

it isn't that hard - and this is an active site that i am confident endures daily stress - while being maintained by minimal folks. i could understand why it isn't in place yet. and have requested this option in a previous thread, but have just found away around it for now. if most folks did the same - it would not need to be implemented.
