The lack of constructive comments bothers me a lot- if someone gives an image a one or two or three- well stand up & say why !!! |
I'm not voting in this challenge. If you like, you can PM me the title of your work, and I'll leave you a comprehensive comment. Or, you can wait until rollover and ask then. |

You're kicking my ass...I'm at a 4.7something. As far as I can see....mine is unique...at least to this free study...

This is so true. Got a comment from somebody and I was thinking, what the heck is this guy talking about. Well it only took a second to look at his profile and understand why and what he is all about. That's when you just have to let go and leave be. This is what makes DPC so unique. Comments would be nice but it's not always possible. There is space here from a the beginner to the pro. The young photographer and the old :). We all contribute and we all hopefully mature and learn. |

I've done just as you ask before but it really isn't as straightforward as you might think. Try it yourself. Images that I've given low scores to are normally poorly executed and dull in subject matter - there isn't any nice way to dress that up, so when you take the time to point out the whys and wherefores of a low score given it's difficult to not come across as patronising, vindictive or both. How does that serve the photographer? It's very unusual for me to score 1-3 on an image that scores well overall, do you really think that the photographer remains mystified as why their shot didn't compare favourably with the competition? An out of focus figurine shot is never going to do well - how does saying "I don't like figurine shots and this one is particularly poorly executed" help? Do you really think that would tell the photographer something they might not glean themselves?
This sounds like a rant now... Sorry about that, it isn't meant to be :-)
I would offer a challenge to you, pick out some images that you've given a low score to and offer some comments as you suggest. If you can report back that you feel it was a worthwhile exercise then I'll reconsider my position in this regard. I suspect though, that you'll find the whole experience unrewarding and that the photographers you offer your views to won't thank you for it and, in the final analysis, will learn nothing new either. |

Well put Paul. Been there done that. I generally now give a very short comment, at either end of the scale, with the occasional "Your image moved me" speech if it did :) |

Did just that after reading patio127's post. ie. commented on all submissions that were in my two lowest scoring groups.
May or may not help the submitters but at least they now have "some" feedback rather than no-feedback at all.
And you're right....it's much easier to comment on the good entries :)
ps: I've only been back for a handful of challenges but I recall we'd get proportionately more comments, (and favs during voting), in the old days.

That's why I like to post offers to comment on the entries of people who complain about a lack of comments on their poorly scoring entries. These people actively want comments in-challenge, and offering them is a good way to say exactly what the problems may be with a photo scoring lower. |

Yeah fair point...I'll be doing that from now on so don't be offended if you get one of my comments. |
Why would I be offended , Gary ? You wouldn't come across as "patronizing or vindictive " would you ?
I think you missed my point...enough said |

Thank you for your why a 5 and not a 6 comment paulbtlw. Comments like that are useful and are very appreciated. By me at least.

I LOVE my comments - thanks, people! I really should go pay it back, too. But I'm doing my taxes. Argh...
Score was disconcertingly astronomical early, then slid into OMG! for awhile. Then down to "maybe a top twenty in a FS???" but is now at a very nice but more realistic "maybe hang for a top 50 in a FS?" range. I'm good with it. |

I would still love a comment - any comment. Score is decent, though. |

kind of in the same boat for me, first 2 votes were 9s which was a first for me then dropped dramatically over the weekend. starting to make a slight comeback though. |

Happy with the score and comments. But i'd be happier if i can get comments that contain more than one word :)
Better if someone can give me a Why a 6 and not a 7 type of comment ;) |

4.63 but is fair compared to the competition. I predict my Black & White entry will score TWO whole points higher than my Free Study ! |
