I only accept "achieve the effect you intended" if you truly intended the effect before you clicked the shutter. :)

Nice wedding pics, but what's with all the blown out highlights?

Thanks...it's 2011, I'm used to forums parsing links automatically. |
If you click the box under the reply window that says "Automatically parse urls" it will. :) |

I went to the ufc.com site and went into the photoshoot intending to replicate that high contrast look.
Do you want to see other pictures I've done with "technical" exposure? You think I messed up to get that look? Considering that all of that contrast was added in post?
Lol. |

I never made such an assumption... notice my triple use of the word you... meaning I'm not the one you have to convince that you got the effect you wanted.

Now, there's this guy named KGeary who shot some martial-arts students in white garments, you should check HIM out. Dude knows how to blow his highlights :-)

So if the highlight is small, it's ok? Ever seen a blown out window that looked great for the shot? I have. |
You're misunderstanding me. I'm on your side. I'm being funny. I think your blown highlights on the karate kids are pretty much OK. They may be a tad out of control in a few places, but nothing that can't be coped with in post. I think you're using the technique effectively, pretty much.
I hate people who react in a knee-jerk way to a perceived technical flaw, as if there's only one flavor of ice cream in the world.

Blow the highlight in a way that is efficient |
Sort of a modified high key challenge, I like it!
Wouldn't this shot be sooooo much better if there was detail in the blown areas?
nope |

There are no rules on personal preference. This thread is in support of blown highlights and the arguments thereafter.
It's quite fun sometimes to follow a discussion on personal taste :) It's sorta like a discussion on religion. Some people like it. Some people don't.

Since you mentioned it, a broken piece of one of the tablets God gave to Moses was found in the middle east:
It is believed to have been intentionally chopped off the bottom by a subversive Israelite photographer. |

I think if you look carefully this is clearly chopped off the top of a third and hereto unrecorded tablet. This means that there are four other commandments related to photography. Which rules are truly the heavenly five is up for debate but we now know one, and I look forward to finding out which are the other four, when I am cast into the fiery pit for violating them. |

It isn't just "blown" highlights that we should be ranting about, but many things that less-than-spectacular photographers bitch about on a regular basis in others people's work. Why, just look at the dismal voting patterns around here, where 6, not 9, not 8, but 6 is considered a "great" score. Sad. |

And I guess you get to choose who those "less than spectacular" photographers are you want to complain about? Glad to see you can judge but others can't. |

maybe there could be a "bitch threshhold" instituted. if you have 4 or more ribbons you are given a "bitch pass".
Also, if you've ever been my ex-wife you get one too.

Hey, who said ribbons constituted the measure of quality around here? (Besides the voters, the site owners, and the reason for the existence of the site.) |

What's the point of posting this? Did you check the date? Even if it helps you make some sort of point, I had about 4 months experience when that shot was taken.

It was a lame attempt to lighten the mood. Didn't mean to offend. But sometimes we take ourselves too seriously.
I do believe in breaking the rules ... on purpose ... to achieve a desired result. |

Slippy doesn't need fancy L-glass lenses, he bends the light onto the sensor with his will ! |
