What I have on my 1Dm4
Sigma 24mm f/1.8 EX Aspherical DG DF Macro for Canon
Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM
Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0L IS USM
I bought the Sigma because the Canon equivalent was too much. Because I'm getting more and more into video, I'm really looking for lenses that work well doing both. The Sigma isn't panning out as well as I would have liked. For photography it's not bad, noisy though. For video, I just can't rely on it. SO...a new lens
One of these would cover the focal range I'm missing.
EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM
or
EF 24-70mm f/4L USM
BUT a nice prime lens like these have shown to produce some beautiful images (Bokeh etc...especially when taking video)
EF 50mm f/1.4 USM
EF 85m f/1.2L II USM (Getting expensive)
I wish I could buy them all...but I have to eat. Just looking for some input on the lenses or some that I may have missed. I wish I could go out and rent lenses, but there aren't any rental shops that I know of. A wedding photographer I know uses the 24-105mm but says he's not a fan of the lens. I haven't used it. |

| I love my 50mm 1.4, really great for portraits and it worked well for video. The 24-70 may be a bit more versatile but I have grown to prefer primes as of late. |

| Well, if you're looking to replace a 24mm lens, and you're willing to consider L glass, have you considered the 24/1.4L? Even the original is a stunner, and for video it should create some beautiful footage. |

I wish I could play with it for a while first. I'm leaning more towards covering my focal range...
Here's a video done on the 5Dm2 that's quite inspiring

I'm sure you already are aware of it, but let me point out that the 24-70 is f/2.8. You may have been thinking of the 17-40 f/4.0L. And I don't take video, but I imagine you'll be very pleased with either of these zoom options. |

I think covering your focal range is a good idea. Fast primes are a second consideration, even though I hate to say it, LOL.
In that range, there is no better choice than the 24-70/2.8L. Yes, the 24-105 has slightly more range and is smaller/lighter, but it is also f/4 and has greater distortion, and you already have the 70-105 range covered.
There continue to be rumors that the 24-70 will be updated, but even if that comes to pass, I will not upgrade mine unless there is a very clear reason to do so. |
