So I'm about to attempt to learn how to enhance eyes in a portrait using GIMP, and thought I would see if anyone else uses GIMP and if you have tips or a really good link to a tutorial. I've briefly scanned over tutorials and seem to get lost a few steps in. I'd just like the whites to pop more, possibly enhance eyelashes, and maybe learn to change eye color.
Any help would be great! :)

Not directly familiar with gimp, but in general here are some steps I tend to use.
Do some healing first (spot heal out larger red veins in the whites of the eyes, clumps on eyelashes, hair/lashes, etc). Increase the brightness in the eyes slightly (don't overdo it, can look scary fake). I work on the irises more, brighten them a bit, maybe saturate a little). I use a contrast brush lightly over the eye (darkens lashes, mascara and so forth). I do a light strength saturate brush over the eye makeup, as lighting often fades it a bit). I will sometimes do a very light local sharpen on the eyes. All of this is with a soft touch, as anything too much will start to look odd or unnatural, and the eyes are the thing that the viewer tends to go to first, and anything "off" will be noticed to some degree. |

Okay, first I create a new layer from visible, select the dodge/burn tool and dodge and burn... Dodge the inside part of the eye (not the pupil... area around the pupil) then burn the outside part of the eye (the darker rim around the outside part of the eye...)
Then use this tutorial on GIMP to get the color eye that you want...

its a little winded, but its designed for beginners...
Best of luck
oh and upon edit... I have just learned how to do this myself... so if anyone knows how to do it better or easier by all means, please chime in :)

Check out this step by step tutorial Its pretty good. They key advice is to sharpen the eyes ( bring out the sparkle and color) and soften the area around the eye ( hide the wrinkles and discolorations). And its a cheat, but if the lighting is too soft, I like to paint in a blob of white to imitate the sparkle that would have been there if I had used a flash. It is easy to overdo, but a light touch adds a lot to a flat portrait. |
