i have always thought about doing a photo for a challenge that has an extremely negative emotional feel. I would never do anything distasteful or graphic, but the image would not have a happy vibe to it all and if i did it right, it would convey a strong sense of sadness. I also don't want to give away the theme in case a suitable challenge topic ever comes up.

do you think scoring for such an image would be adversely affected? I would probably still enter it anyway, i'm just curious as to what thoughts you have.

I think emotion, regardless of it being positive or "negative" is what we strive for with photography. For a photo to be successful, one needs to derive a response from the audience. A powerful "sad" image will do as well as a powerful "happy" image in my books. Maybe even better actually if you look at the thread on the BBC (I think) photo awards -- many of the top photos are pictures that generate a strong negative emotion.

I actually suggested a sadness challenge.

I think it would. I have an entry in voting at the moment and comments suggest some of the low votes may be because of an aspect that some people find creepy. I felt that aspect was what made the shot.

Personally, if an entry causes a reaction in me, even a negative one, I consider that to be worth a higher vote.

Spiff, are you being creepy again? I thought we discussed that... :P

Yes, you did counsel me, but I enjoy it too much to stop.

check out the abstract emotion challenge (me too lazy to link) - negative and sad photos did fine there ;-)

Grief

This scored 5.9 in the challenge. After the challenge, I made a few improvements based on the comments, and free of the DPC rules. The resulting image won a significant honor and money prize in a museum competition.

I think people like to feel emotion when they view art.

If it is done well then you should do fine but you will likely get some low votes just due to the negative emotion. I thought immediately of this photo by judi

It still finished well but looking at the votes it does seem as though she was hit by some low numbers from her choice of subject but that is art for you.

I think emotions are fine to deal with in photos. How can a social organization connect with their constituents in their advertising if they do not empathize with the emotions they are going through...

I'm thinking teenage suicide prevention, pregnancy help, physical abuse prevention agencies, public agencies and religious institutions alike.
