Hey all, Here is my dilemma. I want to start doing some studio type shots, nothing professional or for money, but for my own family. We just had a baby and I'm really looking to do this on the cheap. Here's what I have so far. I have a Nikon D200, a 50mm 1.8 (I have other lenses, but from what I've read, this is a great portrait lens) , an SB-24 flash, and I've ordered the RF-602 wireless flash trigger w/ three receivers (in case I add flashes). So I'm thinking I need a background and perhaps an umbrella w/stand and maybe another flash??? I guess what I'm asking is what do I need to get decent results at real budget prices (given that we just had a baby :) ) Anyway, please throw some input my way, as I have a birthday coming and the wifey and family are looking for gift ideas... Thanks in advance...

I would suggest a 5in1 reflector. Best buy for the money I have made. You get a white and silver reflector to add additional light to your subject, a gold reflector for certain shots, a black panel to reduce light or use outside to block light and a diffusion panel to soften hard light. You can really do a lot with these things and I always carry one with me.

Hmm... that sounds like a good idea. This seems like a great way to cheaply manipulate light. Like I said, I'm trying to keep it simple. I'm really just looking for a setup that I can put in the living room and fire off some shots. I've been meaning to look into reflectors though, because I do venture off to the beach allot and I know reflectors can be really helpful there... Thanks for the info

Yes, a 5 in 1 reflector is a great thing to get. I would also suggest a convertible umbrella (one that will let you do shoot thru or reflective), the light stand, and a mount that fits on top of the light stand, accepts a hotshoe flash and an umbrella. You can also score some sheets of white and black poster board to use as flags, reflectors, etc.
