For those that would have experience with the Canon 400d and either the s95 or G12 how does the noise compare.

Does the 400d have less or more noise than the other two (older sensor)

I'm still deciding on a new purchase but just want to know if the images from either the s95 or G12 would be better or worse than the 400d for noise at higher ISO.

Thanks for any advice offered.

Not exactly the same, but close. I have a G11 I bought a few weeks ago and I find the image quality is comparable to a Rebel XT. The G and S series does go to a higher ISO than the Rebels do. My wife still has a Rebel XT and I can do some pixel peeping comparison tests top my G11 if you like.

Hard to compare.. IQ should generally be higher on the DSLR (of just about any age), but the tech of the new (read 10MP) G&S series is pretty freaking amazing...

Hi Steve,

Yes, a comparison would be great.
The G11 is pretty well the same as the G12 and in turn the same as the S95 so this would be very helpful.

Hi Cory,
Yes, I was thinking the same thing regarding noise with these new sensors.

Thinking of selling my 400d and getting the G12 for a carry around.
If I hold onto the 400d I might just go with the s95 for size. Hmmmmm

Thanks to both of you.

I think that 5 or 6 years of tech makes a difference. I've been going through a lot of my Rebel XT shots from 2 or 3 years ago, and the IQ is very comparable to what I am seeing from the G11. In many cases the G11 is better. Some of that might be my own camera skills being better, but still...

I'll do some comparison tests for you. I'll probably just take some shots out the front door with both cameras and try to use the same settings as much as I can.

Thanks for that Steve, much appreciated.

Could you also compare something with a bit of shadow (interested in shadow noise also).

one of the camera comparison websites lets you compare crops of different cameras of the same image, I thought it was cameralabs but I can't find it now.

My G11 is good up to about 800, maybe 1600 depending on what you are going to use it for. DSLR and compacts are really different animals though so it should really depend on your end usage. The G11 is great when I don't want to pull out my SLR and has really good autoWB, better than my T1i.

Here's some initial comparison shots at ISO 400 & 800. 1:1 screen capture in Canon DPP with no adjustments applied to the RAW. Rebel XT (upper left in each sample) is noticeably better at handling noise. I don't feel the G11 is any slouch for a compact, however. Make sure to click the full size link.

Thanks for the Steve. G11 looks very good.

Will have to make my mind up soon.

These two recent challenge entries of mine were shot with the G11, if it helps to see what kind of detail can be gotten with it. I can't crop too heavily, but up to about 30% off the frame still maintains clear and sharp IQ for challenges.
