Is it me or is it an American thing,but I have no idea what the two symbols either side of out mean???!!

Italics, they were probably trying to do some html code or something and that's the code to use italics.

What Aarthek said. They likely put an extra space in or something. For example Italics and [i]Italics[/i ] In the second one there was an extra space used after the second i.

It is the code for Italics using PHP code, not pure HTML. You can italicize text in the DPC forums by clicking the second little button from the left (with the "i" on it) above the compose post field; likewise you can make Bold or Underlined text using the buttons on either side. There is a somewhat outdated tutorial on how to use DPC forum code under the Learn menu. |

Not to split hairs, but this is not PHP code, either (granted, the bulletin board is run by PHP, but this coding in itself isn't PHP). It would be BBCode, described here.
