Well....I set up remotely from 50 miles away. Put setting for DDNS into the camera software as was instructed on the website at dyndns.com. Got the free service going and restarted the cam remotely. Now I can reach the came with a "name" instead of the ip numbers.....

....so now if my modem resets by a power failure, my new IP will be picked up by dnydns and I will still have access to the cam??

Yeah, I think that's the idea, but access will be through the name you've chosen, not the IP address (unless you got assigned the same one). Thanks for starting this thread -- I may be able to use this myself. :-)

Do you know how often the camera sends the IP to DynDNS? On my camera I have options for Update Periods from every 15 minutes to once in 24 hours. On the router it is done automatically by the router each time the IP address changes. This is why I prefer to use DDNS service on the router. It also allows me to have multiple cameras on the same subdomain by forwarding different ports to static LAN IP addresses e.g. ken.dyndns-home.com:89 for the first camera, ken.dyndns-home.com:90 for the second camera etc. If you use camera software you you will need to create a subdomain for each camera.

Yes...I understand about the router/camera difference. However, I couldn't get into my router remotley and had to settle for the cam at this point. I'm adding another cam next week so I will surely change to the router route!

Not sure about the time interval thing.

One more tip - if you use a router and multiple cameras a momentary power failure can cause problems with the settings. The way to fix it is to reboot the router and switch off/on the cameras. It is a bit difficult to do if you are 10000 miles away from home so we used to ask the neighbor to do it for us. But a better solution is to put electronic timers on power points so that each device is turned off and back on every day after 10 minutes. We have had this system for few years now and it works well.

Yes I have the "name" address now. I'm assuming that since that went through, it will now do its job and report any IP change to the "dyn" website and I can still access the cam.

This will help a great deal b/c the area I live in has very short power outages at times. If the modem gets a new IP...I would be knocked off my cam viewer until I physically went the the house and looked at it !

Ok...now that I have this working....I want to know HOW it works.

I have my cam through my linksys router which in turn is hooked to my cable modem...

In the cam I put DDNS "link" into the software.

My Provider says that if power goes out, my IP will change. Which would be bad b/c I would not be able to access the cam remotely until I went to the router and retrieved the new IP.

With this DDNS thing, if the power goes out and a new IP is assigned...somehow this gets reported to Dyndns at which point it updates the info and I can still see cam by using my assigned name (member.dyndns-remote.com).

How?

Ok...this DNS thing is working great.....does what it says!

One little thing about DynDNS setup in the router... usually the router will notify DynDNS only if the IP changes. If you have a free account with DynDNS, it will be cancelled if no updates have been received in 30 days. So if you dont change IP in 30 days...

Fortunately you'll get a warning from DynDNS before they cancel your account so you can update manually.

I have a timer that reboots the router every night (this is to deal with brief power failures) and that resets the IP address at the same time

Those are some good tips...considering I didn't know about the time limit thing !
