How did you find out it was DQ'd though? Obviously you're keeping tabs on the DPC site. Did they not send you a PM through DPC asking for the RAW file? Only through your e-mail? That's a problem I can see clearly right there.
Please send it in and get this fixed. |
Fair dues to the site - the normal method of validation has been good for the other thousand or so challenges. As far as I remember (it was a while ago) you do get both an email AND a message on your DPC homepage when validation is required. |

I did get the message on the homepage that validation was required, just not a separate PM. Not that I expected one. And I do remember thinking it was weird that even after I had submitted the original and it was sittin' there on the left side of the page that it STILL said I needed validation... It's been so darn long since my last (and only) ribbon I guess I thought that was just the norm and that once they had a chance to look at it the message would go away. I'm not used to winning these things and that, along with the fact that I'm not as active in general here, made me not clue in that something was amiss.

No matter how things turn out, it was one heck of an image...

To SC: in the spirit of the holidays, please allow some latitude for Rompy to produce the validation file. Don't punish her for a communication misunderstanding. Compassion is a good thing! |

I agree about compassion, but this is not exactly a case of miscommunication. The rules require -- explicitly enough IMO -- an unaltered original, exactly as is saved by the camera. The file submitted as an original was a JPEG which indicated that it had been processed by some "other software" program. The relevant part of the rule set reads

This notice will be sent, with instructions, to your listed email address, and will also appear on the left side of your DPChallenge home page when you are logged in. Files that have been saved or altered with any editing or transfer software are NOT originals. DNG files are not considered originals unless recorded in that format by the camera.

If a (truly) original RAW file had been submitted in the first place, as the instructions request, this thread would probably not exist.
FYI: there were two proof requests, one automatically issued by the site (as a top-5 finisher) and another by an SC member, also on 12/15, less than four hours after the JPEG was received, indicated that it showed modification by "other software" and re-requesting a "true original." (see below)
I don't think there is much else SC members can do -- we have no way to know if people don't read their mail, if mail's been diverted by a spam filter, blocked by your service provider (see recent thread regarding possible problems with Comcast service), or even if there's some defect in the DPC system -- we have no control over the code, server, etc. Even so, it sounds as though the request remained posted on the photographer's Home page, and there is/was probably a message in the photographer's on-site PM in-box. If this last is not the case, please let us know ...

As I said earlier, it's my bad and a lesson learned I guess. DPC did nothing wrong, I did. Just me not paying attention to the rules. Thems the breaks.
Thank you everyone for being so sweet. I appreciate the good thoughts.

I think you might go ahead and submit the RAW file; it is possible that the decision will be reconsidered, though (IMO) a reversal is also a little unfair to the folks who just thought they had advanced to a ribbon/HM to take it away again ...
Also remember that I doubt this will change anyone's opinion of the quality of your photograph -- you will still know what people thought of it, regardless of where it shows up in the challenge results list. |

Assuming that a RAW file was submitted to validate the photo, is it not possible that two third place prizes could be doled out... or is that something beyond the rules.
Just a thought,

SC has reversed at least one DQ in the past when there was an issue with getting a proper original (don't recall all the details, but I know it's not exactly the same...).
