Well after much thought I'll be going Nikon for my first DSLR -- in 1/2 year or so. Just want to wait until the prices go down a bit.

My wife offered to buy a film SLR if I'd get the lenses. We bought a F80 (N80 in the States), which is the same body as the D100, I think. I actually got to hold one in the store ... gave me goose bumps. I think my credit card was glowing in my back pocket. It came with a 28-80mm lens. I bought a 70-300mm lens. It's going to be weird shooting with film. I never touched a SLR before today, so it'll be a learning experience; I'm not used to not having instant feedback like with digital photography.

I'll probably get a D100 by this summer, even if the prices remain the same.

Why did I choose Nikon? No real reason. I kind of like the look of them, and I know they make quality stuff, as does Canon. Ciao.

Jacko, I just bought this baby. I swear I think I sleep with the thing. You won't be disappointed with your decision. But, as you have noted, you can put a child through college for the price. Good luck!

The lenses for the N80 should work on any of the Nikon DSLR cams as well as the Fuji S2 :)

hahaha, that is great hardwaybets, I'm like the same way. I baby that camera. When I left the store with my D100 last week, I was thinking, "am I nuts!!" the next day I went out shooting with it and I love it. Jacko, just as said before, you won't be disappointed.

Jacques, Congratulations on the new F80. A good friend of mine is on the same path as you. She purchased the F80 last year and is now adding the D100. The weight and feel of the cameras are very similar and she is delighted with the performance. She hated the weight of my D1x as she says it is not built for a woman, as it is so very heavy (my wife complains about the weight too). So, the D100 has more than the obvious features going for it.

The lenses are exchangeable with the difference being the 1.5x magnification of the D100. So, your 28mm-80mm lens will become a 42mm-120mm and the 70mm-300mm lens will become a 105mm-450mm! On the long focal length side, it is great. But, on the short focal length side, it is a challenge. An ultra wide fixed focal length lens or a very wide zoom lens may be a consideration in the future. My friend with the Fuji S2 went with a Sigma ultra wide zoom and is very pleased. Enjoy the new toys; there is no better feeling then buying a new camera and bringing it home on the first day. I just purchased a new Hasselblad 501CM yesterday, so I am enjoying the rapture too. Michael

My wife bought herself a camera, but I bought myselft a new computer. Pentium 4 2.0Ghz, 512M Ram, wooo hoooo. All for $999 Canadian at Future Shop. I still haven't taken it out of the box. I'm still at my parents' place. We're leaving this afternoon. Cool. I have a SLR and a computer to play with. :)

Note to self: don't forget to enter something for this week's challenges.

Jacques, you must have been a very good little boy this year, in view of the fact that Santa’s delivery has been so bountiful. You are living a charmed life for sure – new camera, new computer, new lenses, two significant DPC wins, etc.

Maybe you were not so good? You didn’t rob that bank that you work at, did you? Either way, have fun with the new toys, I am very jealous. Michael

I was so close to buying the Nikon D100 as well, but bought a used Nikon F100 SLR instead about a month ago. Thing is I am getting so used the instant feedback of digital, I haven't even used it yet! I also have the Nikon F70 and have had good results from it, but am hoping to study photography when I get back to the UK and wanted to take advantage of the good prices here in Japan before I leave. Better start practicing with the F100 before I forget all about SLR cameras! Have fun with your new toys!
