Would a advertisement for produced event meet the challenge?
2 a : something produced b : something resulting from or necessarily following from a set of conditions |

in my opinion it would defenitely meet the challenge. An avent is just as much a "product" as a can of fruit. |

A poster, handbill, or print ad would probably constitute a "piece of artwork" in and of itself, as much or more than a "product."
This means your photo of any such item must show the item in some other context, such as a crumpled flyer in the wastebasket or a tattered poster on a wall, or you will run afoul of the "other artwork" rule, even if you created the item yourself. |

If you take a photo that captures the actual event somehow and used that in the advertisement, I think it would qualify. The challenge does say take a photo of the "PRODUCT"...not just find a way to sell the product.
I had what I thought was a nice idea for the challenge, but after reading the description decided against it because it wasn't a photo of the actual product - it was more of an ad campaign shot to try and sell the product. I didn't think it would meet the challenge.
That being said...you can always give a try! |

So ... what about a service. Hard to photograph "film processing" for example. You could photograph something that advertised a service ... in the hypothetical, you could photograph a can of film and some beautiful prints possibly lighting up the eyes of the photographer with their clarity, color and quality ... well you get the idea.
So, would that meet the challenge or is it a stretch?.

Oh, that kind of product. I was wondering how I was going to shoot the result of multiplication....
Thanks for clearing that up! |

Smart ass! I guess if, hypothetically, you were advertizing the service of multiplication ... you know, "dial a multiplication," you could photograph the result. So, would that meet the challenge, or is it a stretch?

I think an event or action is good. Maybe like advertising Carpet Cleaning (although hard to show) or something like an airlines, or a place? But depends on how well you can intrepret that to the viewer/voter.

Would any of the following NOT meet the challenge?
A "public service" advertisement for a municipal swimming pool. An advertisement for a dry cleaning establishment. An advertisement for a university. A "get out the vote" advertisement. A "smoking kills" advertisement. An advertisement for an upcoming rock concert. You get the idea. How strict do you think people will interpret the word "product" in the challenge explanation?
To me, a product is probably a three dimensional "thing," like a watch, an MP3 player, a bottle of vodka. But is the point of the challenge to produce an advertisement for something like this, or is the point of the challenge to produce a photo that would be used as an advertisemment (product or service)?
Whatcha think???

I think I went the safe route and photographed a "thing." I don't want a second brown ribbon to go with the one I'm about to get in Extraordinary! :o)

I took the safe route and photographed an actual product, I wouldn't mind seeing services and other ideas though... |

Has anyone ever gone from Blue Ribbon to Brown in a challenge or two (without intending to do so)?

That will be me in a couple of days...I doubt anyone else is sitting at a 4.3 right now! LOL
At least I tried, right?

Aw, Laurie, don't sweat it. A 4.3 will put you in the bottom quartile, but hardly in Brown contention. Those are usually well below 4. Your score will merely be embarrassing, not humiliating...

Actually, I won't really be that embarrassed...the picture itself does suck quite badly, but it was the most extraordinary subject I'd ever seen in my life, let alone taken a picture of during the challenge week. I'll live.
