10th year anniversary, we should publish a DPC book with photos gathered from the blue winners. We have about 2 years to think about it. Whoever creates the book, probably will need permission from photographers and maybe ask larger formats of the photos as well.

Just a thought :)

And probably get permission from Langdon as it is associated with the site. LOL!

I'd love to see a DPC book. I'd be happy to work on designing it too. Designing books is something I earn a little money at out in the Real World, actually...

I don't see why a book "about" DPC should be limited to winners-of-blue, however, or even ribboners in general; we're much broader than that. I'd want to see some of the flip-n-blends in it, I'd want to see some of the Posthumous-thread standouts, stuff like that.

You could use this as the cover shot... ;-)

I would vote for Leroy to be on the cover. (I will not post the proposed cover shot though!)

I agree with Bear. Definitely blue ribbon shots -- but also some highly acclaimed, under appreciated stuff. I think it should run the full spectrum.

Highly acclaimed, by whom... or are we to assume that this is to be interpreted as those Posthumous awards that also appealed to the masses?... Just curious.

I think it would be great to have different sections or chapters. Each featuring a different type of photography. One could be a blue ribbon section, one could be a texture section, another abstract, and so on. We could have forums to post our favorites from present and past and then make a selection out of those.

I thought of this as well. Maybe some photos that garnered a lot of favorites but didn't score well?

Also, I really like this overall idea!

In the end, somebody's gonna have to be in charge of this book, and that somebody will have to be making decisions. I can visualize "elected" panels working as groups to recommend specific sets of images for specific chapters. Even in the case of ribbon-winning images, we can't publish even a fraction of eligible images, so choices have to be made. IMO it would be foolish to make those choices solely on the basis of scores, not that anybody's necessarily advocating that. But still, there has been serious score-deflation over the years, so this has to be taken into account somehow I'd assume.

Way too early to be talking about details like this LOL. I'll shaddup.

If you really want to represent the site I think it would be neat to have each user that would like to participate add their favorite shot, ya you may not get all perfect shots but it would be an interesting composite of what the site does. No matter what format that is used their will be draw backs but something like this may really create interest from the entire community. Just and idea to toss in the ring.

A good idea, but probably would lead to an unwieldy book. There's gonna have to be some limit on the number of images, or the book will be way too expensive. Plus, if you put together a book where everyone gets to choose an image of theirs to go in, that's just a vanity press book, and typically those aren't real well received by this community :-) (See Photography Laureates)

Yeah, me too ... could save a lot of money and reduce some of the limitations by publishing as a PDF. Any full-sized book in color will cost thousands up-front, whether printed by offset or digital presses -- probably need a minimum print run of between 500-2000 to get the cost/book low enough to be at all practical.

I thought the object was to actually sell this book?

We will have to find a few people for this project.
Here is the project steps should be IMO...

1-Get Langdon and Drew's permission, and ask them if they are planning anything similar

Yes, they are, forget the whole thing
No, they are not and give us permission > continue steps,

2-Find a couple of people who will collect all the photos from their authors (larger versions)
3-Find a couple people to work on layout and text on the book (including the names of participants and donors)
4-Proofing for the book (Langdon and Drew)
5-Finding a publisher for print and set the price for print.
6-Collect money from members with a print deal (Like buying books ahead but investing for the print, plus donations)
7-Publish the book

These steps should be accomplished in two years, before the 10th year anniversary. Members (or other people) should be able order or pre-order books to be delivered on time.

I spent around $700 for the hats and membership giveaways since 2006... I am not the only one, there was DPC radio with interviews couple of years ago, and other free membership giveaways by other members... we should be able to this!

LOLOLO< this is never going to take off.

You know why:

All the Blue winners are like ;'whooooohooooooooooo"" and think they are just sooooooooo cool

All the people that have spent 'money' on DPC are going to expect to be in the book

All people are going to bitch about how many stupid bird shots are in the book

All people are going to bitch about how many water drops are in the book

All people are going to bitch about how many 'eye candy' shots are in the book

All the people that have got a Red or Yellow are going to be put out

All the people with fav's are going to be frustrated cos they aren't in it

All the Browns are going to be pissed off

All the PostH are going to rebel that their shots are not in it

All the people that want to organize it are going to fight over control

All the people that will 'select' what goes into the book will be hated

All the people that are on juried panels, are going to choose what they want and people will get divided into groups

All people are going to upset and delusionaled by the end choice

~~~~
This is the fastest way to piss off a huge majority of people and people will end up blaming Langdon and bitch and whine.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

That is my 2c

Juliet, how do you think an anthology of any sort ever gets published then?

11/15/2010 10:42:34 PM · #22
With great pain, tears, frustration, heartache, upset.

What you seriously think this is going to be a walk in the park. You seriously do not think that this is going to piss off so many people. Do you have any idea how many people will be upset. Realistically, this is a bad idea and will cause resentment and pain to so many people. This site is a very close knitted site, closer than I have seen in my years. And A LOT of people are going to be strained by this.

But who am I to judge or give my 2c too.

Why not put the book on Blurb? No upfront expense, everyone who wants one can buy one. They print 1 or 100, matters not to them.
11/15/2010 10:56:00 PM · #24
if you don't want to piss anyone off, simply put it out there as one of those pay-to-be-included vanity books. if you want in, you pay; otherwise, you got no complaint.

this also solves the getting permission part, as far as the copyright holders go.

as for getting permission from the owners, well, if you can't get them to commit, then you might have to find a way to do an 'unauthorized' bio of the site ;-)
11/15/2010 10:59:49 PM · #25
That is actually a brilliant idea Skip.

They could pay $25 for each photo put in the book. And then all the proceeds could do towards new memberships!
