I thought purpose of runing a program to check for spyware is to help your computer and not fuck it up?
06/30/2004 11:27:01 PM · #2
Which program did you run?
06/30/2004 11:29:14 PM · #3
Ad-aware 6, looks like I gotta get this computer checked out.

I've run Ad-aware on several computers with no problems. All it ever does is finds & deletes the spyware.
Hope you figure out the problem.

Is your browser hijacked or are you just doing a check?
06/30/2004 11:39:34 PM · #6
sounds like you might have that virus & or spy ware that disables Ad-ware. There was a thread about this last month or so, and i beleive there is a fix for it.

I have all my users running adaware 6 build 181 and have never had a problem.

Are you comfortable with looking at Registry Entries? Hijackthis is the tool that I use to see if someones pewter has been hijacked at work. It is available at Merlin.org near the middle of the page you will see hijackthis. It is a free program.

Basically it will give you a list of items that are running in memory, stuff that was loaded at startup and BHO's. You can remove registry entries with this program so KNOW what you are fixing.

If you are not comfortable looking at registry entries, if you run the program it will give you (2) buttons near the bottom Fix Checked and Save Log. If you choose Save log it will create a small text file of what you see on the screen. If you believe you are hijacked I could take a look at the file at let you know who's bad or not.

ED: for omitted words...important ones

I was hijacked and I just downloaded another browser like Mozilla activated it and was able to run ad-aware, spybot and other virus programs to get rid of it.

I am very happy with Spy Bot S&D. Great job, great price, downloadable.

I had a problem with AdAware removing my ability to type a word or phrase in my address bar, press enter, and it would search Yahoo! for me. Let me just say, that ticked me off, so I went back in, restored what it had done and uninstalled. It wasn't worth it to have to re-release that file every time I would run it.

i wouldnt consider that hi jacked. hi jacked is when your browser is sent to another page, so they can make money. like if you go to google and it sends you to pornjunktion.com.

Oh, oh, no that feature was with our computer from day 1 and I know the ones at my high school would search on MSN if you typed it in the address bar. *shrugs* Whatever I like it. ^_^

Just for the record, I've been using AdAware for ages without any probs.

Any problems with AdAware 'removing' functionality or making problems will most likely originate from the spyware changing things it shouldn't and AdAware trying to pick up the pieces.

I've used Spybot Search and Destroy for a while, but I had something that it just couldn't get rid of a couple of weeks ago. I downloaded Spyware Blaster and haven't had any problems since. I like the protection and recovery point features of Spyware Blaster as well. I hope you get your computer issues resolved...it really sucks.

Please people - for the love of all you care for on your computer:

1) backup now. not later.
2) make sure you have cwshredder installed on your computer. TRUST me. Once you get a cws variant, you CANNOT get rid of it. I was a tech support guy for awhile and I tried EVERY TRICK ever invented. I burned cwshredder to cd and it wouldn't read the cd. I put it on a mem card and it wouldnt read the card. I couldn't open a single page to help me with it - it closed the browser automatically, redirected half the things I typed directly in, stole my yahoo search to its own "go search" page .... the list goes on and on. Install CWShredder and hopefully NEVER have to use it. Just don't uninstall it thinking you've never used it!
