Excellent for portraits, little slow focusing but when you doing portraits time is not an issue.
Very sharp even at f2.8!

I find a 100mm a bit long for portraits, especially on a 1.6 crop camera.
It is good for tight head shots, but something around 50 -70mm seems more comfortable to me. Depends very much on the type of portraits you want to shoot though.

I'd agree with that. My 85mm is a very difficult to use unless the person is a couple of metres away, and even then it's pretty tight. I'll been shooting my sister's graduate in a week and a bit with a 50/1.8, which I'm hoping should be reasonably useful. |

I´d think a 105mm would be too long for portraits, unless maybe if you are outdoors.

it is a bit long, but it does give nice background blur wide open. generally though, I prefer the 50mm f1.8 for portraits, but it's almost too sharp. The 85mm f1.8 should be pretty good too.
This was shot with Sigma 105 @ f2.8
Example 105 f2.8
This was shot woth the Canon 50mm @1.8
Example 50mm f1.8
