I read a few quotations on the subject of art and photography and I thought- It would be great to hear people's take on this subject.
The first is from Picasso:
"We all know that art is not truth. Art is a lie that makes us realize the truth."
How does this quote specifically apply to photography?
Also: I read a quotation,
"What you see in the photograph isn't what you saw at the time. The
real skill of photography is organised visual lying."
Isn't the light reflected through the lens the truth, or is all just pixels like an oil painting is all just paint on a canvas?
well I was inspired by the great series of interviews taking place now on DPC. I hope everyone is in a deeeep mood:

Art & Photography share a common bond.
"There are no right opinions, no wrong opinions. Just a lot in between."
My own quote

There is a myth that the 'camera never lies' which for some reason seems to be accepted as true, when it is so obviously false. From there people suddenly start worrying about digital manipulation as being less honest or 'truthful' than film - when it was all just a lie anyway.
It is also very true that the camera points both ways.

conversly, i read a quote by a poet i think, that said about photography: "plead the fleeting moment to remain." in that photography captures what you interesting thing you saw in that small moment of time. |

I see how this could be taken as being an apologist for digital editing- I truly meant in in a photography in general sort of way.
"Tha camera never lies" is certainly something that mean people say to fat or ugly people. But what I get from the quotes is that that the truth is not in the picture itself but in the message of the art. The camera does "lie" and not in an evil way.
It lies in a wonderful way. |
