This is a good site. Addictive, but good.

Thank-you for your Howdy!

Talking about pictures being "borrowed", do you think it's wise to watermark on places like Flickr?
Do you sign your pics on the front? I think it's a good idea. It doesn't have to be obtrusive. I'm wondering what you think?

I don't watermark here, but I would at Flickr. I make almost all of my prints suitable for displaying with or without a frame/mat, so I print the title and copyright notice in the border (poster-style) -- it is the customer's choice whether or not to cover it up. Since they are available for shipping directly to the customer, I'm not actually "signing" most prints, nor making any numbered/limited editions.

I don't sell many prints, but I don't really do any marketing either. :-(

Hey Mom...

Please don't think that you stink... I really hope that you didn't pull that from what I said (Someone actually told me once that my pics stunk, and I would never want to do that to someone else)...

I love to go to national parks. One of the things that I notice is the number of people with really nice cameras. If every one of those people is taking at least mediocre pictures (probably better than mediocre) then there are a whole lot of really good pictures out there. That being said, you are putting yourself up against some really stiff competition.

I might be overly cautious... I just would hate to waste my time trying to sell pics that will be swamped out in the marketplace (thinking of my own work, not yours). Also, the surest way to take all the fun out of a hobby is to turn it into a business.

Sooooo... in conclusion, you don't suck!!!!! I would say though that I wasn't doing backflips over the pics that you have shown. Once again let me reiterate that I am not an art critic (I'm actually a data analyst by trade). This is just my opinion, and to be honest I would love to have you prove me wrong.

Dear Lou,
I was only joking about the "stinks", but you did let me down gently, and I do appreciate it. What I don't want, and would really harm my attempts, is for people to say "Oh, the poor old lady. Let's just make her feel good and say all her stuff is GREAT!"
That wouldn't help me at all. Do you think my pictures are boring? Most of the pics on FLICKR are me trying for stock, but I don't have enough to send in a file yet. The Lake and the Farm Fields through the branches I thought might be nice for a wall. They lack that spark, but what is "that spark?" I thought they were pretty good, and I have gotten compliments on them. My father thinks the field one stinks, because the branches are in the way, but I thought the branches gave it a frame.

So different thoughts, but for people who may-be don't think they stink, but still wouldn't buy them, what do they lack?

I agree, telling anyone their stuff stinks, isn't very nice. I am also a prim/naive artist, and people have told me my stuff stinks. If I hadn't actually sold some things, I might have given up after that criticism. (I have nothing for sale right now, but if you wonder what prim/naive is, it's on the photos of my FaceBook, Momsince1980/MaryBennett)

Thank-you to all who have read, and who are also commenting.

Mom

PS, I have used also now a D5000, but my pictures seem so much better to me on the stinky little Olympus Stylist. Should I be worried? :D
