Very interesting, it looks like Google has just released a new image format called WEBP..

Based off of video encoding technology, the performance looks to be really killer in respect to compression achieved while minimizing quality loss.

Have a look, it's pretty impressive..

ETA: The independent reviews are not so kind...

I saw a mention of it on Gizmodo yesterday. Regardless of technical merits, the biggest hurdle is always gaining widespread acceptance. Remember JPEG 2000?

As the availability of bandwidth keeps increasing, it seems kinda pointless to be introducing new formats aimed at saving space. Most of the examples only show marginal file size savings anyway. Seems like an odd thing for them to bother attempting.
