Google - new image format

This could have major impact on the way that images are placed and viewed on the web. I suppose in a way, it could also have an impact the way we write some images to disk in camera.

Thoughts?

They've got a massive battle on their hands if they think they can replace jpeg, still, if it's smaller and makes the web faster without sacrificing more quality than jpegs currently do, good luck to them!

Just thinking about how widely used jpegs are, and trying to replace the format would be like trying to stop people from speaking English. It will always be around and these days with high speed internet and the direction its going, its not going to matter if its a jpeg, tiff or any other format.

FYI - I'm watching Cheeech and Chong's Next Movie in High Definition right now straming to my PlayStation 3 through the internet from Netflix.... Just an example of why jpegs arent going anywhere and its a pointless battle. Just google trying to tie another major change to their name.

they would be better off building an encoder/decoder service.

the jpg file definition was defined by the Joint Photographic Experts Group, which was sub-committee established by the International Organization for Standardization. i remember reading somewhere a long time ago that the original members of the jpeg group was essentially a consortium of digital camera manufacturers working to define a standard file format for all cameras to write to.
