My score was 6.2ish and just received 2 4s in a row (or could be a 5 and a 3). My score has also dropped pretty sharply in the last two hours. |
Make that 3 4s in a row!!!! |

I stopped voting at 29% because I think the majority of these don't truly suit the challenge. I looked up online, the definition of high key and they are all what I believe, but the voters here disagree. LOL |

This is an interesting challenge to look through. I do believe I might've learned something. High key lighting is a way of setting up the lights in a studio or on a traditional sit-com set. That was no big deal to read up on. A high-key photograph is a little different because you're looking at the photograph, the end product, not talking about the lighting. Then I had this aha moment. A high-key photograph is one from which all but the most essential shadows have been eliminated. A low-key photograph is one from which all but the most essential highlights have been eliminated. So, I feel like I've figured it out, at least for me. Thank you for giving me all those lovely photos to study & vote on! |

I believe that high key is where the majority of tones are above the 50% grey. It doesn't mean that you can't have a shadow or two or some darker tones, but that the majority of the image is over 50% grey and the highlights aren't heavily blown.
I haven't looked at everything yet, but it seems to me that most of the photos fit the challenge perfectly fine.
Jutilda, when/if you're done voting, I'd be curious if you thought mine fit the challenge.
Still dropping by big amounts -- man, those 2s hurt a score!

I agree in that I think many of them may have histograms that would fit the description we have been given; whether all of the images have been crafted in such a way that high-key is a good fit for their subject matter and manages to look optimised is another matter entirely!
If I'm honest, I don't think they're a particularly attractive set of images. At my first scoring pass I've given 4.95 with five 8s but nothing above. I always do a second look through and recast which tends to bump the higher scoring images a little.
I suppose I'm looking for images that look as if the approach to crafting the image has gone beyond increasing exposure and/or brightness and then recovering the highlights. In the final analysis the images should look great fulfilling the challenge brief, not just meet the challenge brief.
Do I ask for too much??
Apologies for my slightly grumpy demeanour! :-) |

I'm really really surprised it's doing this horribly. I don't think it's that bad. o_O

Hey!! The challenge description didn't say they had to be good, only that they had to be high key! Wanting effective images... geesh, you're getting so picky! :P

Very nice comments - more than offset the continuing drop in score. Still hoping for a top-20 finish. |

All I see are B&W pictures! Doesn't that defeat the idea of Hi Key, or in other word "Above medium" tones? Maybe, Im complaining because my score is not so nice...

I don't understand why b&w would negate high key... There's still above medium and below medium tones regardless of whether it's color or b&w. Perhaps I'm not understanding your comment?
low key B&W
high key B&W

Wouldn't call it high, but at least it seems pretty consistent.

No, considering that the technique of high key was popularized by black and white television to reduce contrast to a level the systems could accommodate, black and white is the norm, not the exception.

To be quite honest I'm a little baffled..My entry started out with 4 of the first 5 votes at 8 or better, then has dropped like a stone after 15 votes..But on the bright side I have gotten some great comments, two of which are from very respected members that have more ribbons than I could win in three life times, that agree with my thinking on the image. I think I have lost the ability to produce a DPC friendly image.. |

It's just baffling. This entry has dropped steadily all day. I think only one or two votes were higher than the score. My underexposed entry, which at day 2 and 3 was at a steady 4.8-4.9, is now creeping up to 5.6. |

A high key photograph is one where the overwhelming majority of the tones in the image are above middle gray (including any shadows) yet still maintains detail even in the brightest areas of the subject. Your challenge is to carefully control your lighting and exposure to capture an interesting photo that meets the above definition of "high key". Remember, "high key" does not mean "washed out" or "blown highlights".
There appears to be a dual understanding of "High Key Photography"
It is not 'light on white' with major overexposed and and blown highlights.
Voters should google "High Key Photograhpy" and possibly find they are down scoring photos because they believe they do not meet thier understanding of High Key.
To me most of the submissions do not have enough detail in highlight areas, but are probably scoring well because of this misunderstanding.
You have rated 96 of 96 images (100%) in this challenge.
You have commented on 30 of 96 images (31%) in this challenge.
You have given an average score of 5.1667.

I'm baffled too Tammy. I really thought mine was a good, or at the very least an average, high key image. I guess my idea and the voters' ideas are vastly different as I'm struggling to stay above a 5. Sitting at 5.18xx now but hoping for some voters who see high key my way. :-D |

Starting out so wonderfully strong, now there's a chance that I can't keep above 6. *sigh*
At least I'm starting to get used to the fact. I kept thinking it would go back up. It always takes me a day to get used to the shock of a huge drop. By tomorrow I'll be more upbeat.
