This I don't get. Why are phones so tied to carriers in the USA? Why can't you just go out to the nearest store and buy the phone you want, and use it with your carrier? |

Ooooo, that hit a sore spot! Yes, it is perverse, is it not? Part of it is because there are differing systems deployed (CDMA for Sprint, Verizon and Virgin Mobile, GSM for ATT & T-Mobile) so different hardware is required... but the main reason is "exclusivity contracts" signed between carriers and handset providers. It sucks for the consumer, and I really don't see how it benefits the handset manufacturer. The only one who wins is the provider.
ETA: Wow, welcome back! Long time no-see!

I just got my phone today,
I was searching, comparing, watching videos on you tube .. doing my research,
At the end I was torn between the Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant, which I think is the best phone out there, and the Iphone4.
Galazy: Wonderful screen, widgets, wonderful camera, replaceable battery, sim card that you can move to another phone, extended memory to 42GB.
Iphone4: Wonderful scree, applications .. applications and more applications. The way the hardware is designed is very elegant, it is like the Mercedes of the Phones.
The bad about it: You can't replace its battery, the SIM card only designed for Iphones, so if you broke your Iphone, you have to get another Iphone in order to be able to use your SIM, doesn't support Flash, '' I think I saw an application for that .. but not sure ''.
I went to the store and checked both, yet I am convinced the Galaxy would perform better, I got the Iphone4, the classy design, and again .. applications applications applications. I got 2 Iphones actually, for my Wife and I, we both think it is the best phone we ever had. The Galaxy might slightly out perform it, but come on .. I can wait a second and have less MP in the screen :)
Cheers, |

Droid, but that's because I have one and like it. I don't do all that much on it, but I really like the "tether to the laptop and use as a modem" feature. Comes in very handy sometimes! |

i have a droid.
I work in IT and in my dept the nerds have split into two factions, team droid and team iphone. for what its worth team droid outnumbers team iphone and we have had two defectors as of late.
also with the droid, you tie it to a gmail account. so in 9 months when i upgrade from my droid eris to a beefier droid, all my paid apps will be reloaded at no charge and data tied to them will be resynced

I think I understand why: it creates a unique system in which both seller and buyer share an interest to keep the price high!
Keep in mind that, due to their marketing power, the buyers in this system are not end-users but carriers, who have an interest to tie end-users in long term contracts. Keeping the device price high makes end-users easy to convince to get into long term contracts, in which the device price becomes a non-issue. Keeping the devices price high helps to keep the carriers' per-minute prices high.
Makes sense? |

wired had a great article on att and apple's exclusivity contract.
a lot of the problem is based on the service providers network.
there are different phones for each network. so the manufacturer needs to make a phone for atts/t-mobile network and a phone with different chips for verizon, and so on. one of the problem with the iphone is making the receiving chip that work for Verizon small enough to fit in the iphone, its finally happened just in time that the contract is about to expire, I bet apple isnt going to renew that contract.
to the OP: if you like a pretty closed system get an iphone, if you prefer a little more freedom with the apps you choose, get a droid.

Which of the two have more or better apps for photographers and astronomers? Apple or Android? Probably Apple has more for sure but quality wise who's leading? |

Apple of course, hands down,
But not all of them are free for sure. |

With all the major carriers having Android phones now, I'm relatively sure Apple is losing that lead.

Android has google sky which is a fantastic app....you hold your phone to the sky, and instantly a map appears and shows you every star and planet.
//www.google.com/mobile/skymap/
also, android is catching up with I-phone apps....most are free, and if you do download something and you don't wish to keep it---you get your money back!!

yeah and apple is trying the patent technology where if you jailbreak it, apple can brick the phone if they choose.
right now each update break the jailbreak. but anew one is usually available in a few weeks. Apple doesn't want you getting apps from anywhere but them. Its great business, but if i buy a device i want to do whatever the hell i want with it. I think apple makes great and innovative products but they force you into their storefront which turns me off.

Exactly why I will never ever buy into the Apple mindframe. While I was shopping for a laptop last week I wandered over to the Macbooks. Apart from the software there is nothing advantageous in getting a Macbook instead of another brand, for me. Even the software isn't much different than anything available for Windows. And the price..... yikes! I paid just under half of what the Macbook was going for and I'm sure I can do anything that the Macbook can, or more. I have a bigger screen too.
Nothing against Apple whatsoever, don't get me wrong. I like their products, it's the mindframe that goes along with it that makes me want to hurl. lol |

Not so sure this is a correct statement. I have not researched how many apps are availalbe for each but I can tell you that the Android has photo apps, the biggest name being Photoshop Express by Adobe but there are many more. |

That may be so on older iPhones, but the iPhone 4 with its Retina display (960x640 resolution), blows any other mobile screen away! Retina's display has pixels that are 78 micrometers wide which makes for a pixel density of 326 pixels per inch. Very cool.

It was the Samsung Galaxy I was referring to in my original post (Android being the generic term for the OS) - And the OP did refer to the iPhone3, not the 4.
Anyway, you're right - there's not much between the Galaxy and the iPhone4 in terms of the display quality. However, the Galaxy screen is slightly larger, a consideration if you're showing your portfolio.
Comparison here: //www.engadget.com/2010/06/24/iphone-4-retina-display-vs-galaxy-s-super-amoled-fight/ |
