This I don't get. Why are phones so tied to carriers in the USA? Why can't you just go out to the nearest store and buy the phone you want, and use it with your carrier?

[/quote]

They aren't as tied as you might be lead to believe. Looking at the major players (Sprint/Verizon/AT&T/T-Mobile), two are using IS-95 descended technologies (usually referred to simply as "CDMA"). Since IS-95 and the previous analog phones had no provisions for anything akin to a GSM SIM card, it's been ingrained in the American consumer's mind that you buy a phone from your carrier, and you can only use it with that carrier.

There have been cases in the past where people have been able to get say a Sprint IS-95 phone connected to Verizon, but these stories almost always involve knowing someone who works for Verizon to actually register the phone. Changes in US law were proposed to require phone companies to support moving a phone onto their network if it was technically possible--I thought these passed but they were always irrelevant to me so I haven't kept track.

With the other two carriers, there's absolutely nothing technically stopping someone from going shopping and plugging in any quad band GSM phone into the network. I've successfully avoided buying a phone from the carriers following my first moto since they each like customizing the firmware and experience to improve their brand or profit, and rarely to the benefit of the user (a case in point was AT&T's early disabling of all bluetooth profiles on their phones except handsfree and headset). I find it sad when features I had on my phone nine years ago (dial-up networking, although now seemingly universally referred to as "tethering") is a highly argued-over feature. With T-Mobile, you can even get a monthly discount if you buy your own phone from a third party.

However, and back to your question; other than in big cities, there aren't a lot of options for buying phones. My hometown in the burbs has a mobile phone dealer in the local supermarket; but otherwise you need to take the train to china town to get real options. This contrasts significantly with the UK where there are several major mobile phone store chains that are just as visible, if not more so, than the carrier stores.

I'm typing this from a Droid right now. Just imagine the possibilities for frivolous posting!

Apple of course, hands down,
But not all of them are free for sure.

Not so sure this is a correct statement. I have not researched how many apps are availalbe for each but I can tell you that the Android has photo apps, the biggest name being Photoshop Express by Adobe but there are many more.

I think once again this thread is moving toward being something like Windows vs. Mac :)
Any way, just some facts. Iphone has over 200,000 application, while Android has close to 50,000, source here, regarding the Photoshop, there is photoshop for Iphones, .. and it is free. Photography applications are by the tons for Iphone. Not that i am going to submit my challenges using a photo taken by Iphone and edited on Iphone '' not yet '' :)

No iPhone vs. Android wars from me. I agree with what you have posted. My point was that there are, for the most part, the same apps for Android as there are for iPhone. The numbers may be skewed at the moment but that will not last. There is a reason thrat Jobs relented and is loosening the rules for iPhone apps. He sees it coming and the restrictions they have put in place were holding them back and giving Android an edge. he is trying to remove that edge before it is too late.

P.S. - watch out for Microsoft Phone 7 coming out in October. They may be very very late to the party but they have the muscle and cash to push their way into the market. If the product is as good as I'm hearing they will be a contender this time around. I'm sure this comment will get the Apple / MS war going, sorry.

I just got the EVO 4G, I guess I'll see how good it is. The reviews looked pretty good and I still need time to play with it.

Just read a couple of articles today stating that Droid 2 is great, but there are issues for some w/the flash. Apple apparently didn't want Flash on their phones stating it was an older PC app and wasn't necessary for the new technology. Some of the web items using Flash hang and others don't, so lots to research. The iPhone has the clearest screen it appears, but the Droid 2 is still better screen wise over the Droid X for HD.

I'm holding out as long as I can to get a new phone just to see what happens. I'll just keep charging mine every stinkin' day!

You get either an iPhone or a Droid and you'll charge every day anyway. They do suck power when you use them to play on the net!

I have the original Droid, and just love it! (as far as removing the rocker switch feature going from volume-vibrate-silent, this is easily fixable getting an app to add the feature back) The way I see it... Droids may not be quite where the Iphone is now, but it's developing much faster. I would go with the Droid. The possibilites are really almost endless.

Source is 3 months old. 80k now. Free photoshop on android, too.

Since it's going this way anyway, here's my stances:
Nikon over Canon (close call)
PC over Mac (not so close)
Android over iphone/rim/winphone7 (not remotely close)

;)

Yeah I saw the Phon7 Parade :) It was funny :) but I remember doing something similar for phone 6 or 6.5, I'd say it is their last chance to reserve a foot in this fears competition.
I think one of the biggest reasons for me to select the Iphone instead of android, is the intention of moving Mac with my next computer purchase. I didn't find Win7 amazing at all, on the contrary it gave me more trouble than XP for sure, the much that I started screen capturing the errors I've got from Win7, and so far here is my collection
All over all, I really love my Iphone, I thought it is going to be a nice phone only .. but it is smashing :) Maybe because it is my first smart phone :)

I hadn't realized it was Fotoman asking originally. Obviously, the answer is the Nokia N900 which runs full-blown GIMP (albeit in 256MB of physical RAM). Also, there's blessn900 (//blessn900.com/).

Holy crap! If I had that many issues I'd switch to a Mac too. I can't answer the question of why but I have very few issues with Win 7. As a matter of fact I love it and find it runs flawlessly most of the time. I get an occasional video driver failure that self corrects but chalk that up to the hardware manufacturer not doing a good job with their drivers.

Good luck with the switch, I hope all the programs you use port over.

You can't blame W7 for hardware issues.

I'd just like to say, that I'm completely in love with my Motorlola Backflip, which is certainly not a top of the line Aneroid. it's so much more responsive than my iPhone 3G that it's ridiculous.
