I have a couple of nighttime shots I would like to share. I wished I could have tried a few other settings, but it was just too damn cold..
Does anyone else have some nightshots they can share?

Dan,
It looks like you are off to a good start with night shots. The first of these two shows an interesting technique for the exposure also. In a majority of photos of this nature, the light sources visible in the shot are overexposed. Lights tend to flare on a long exposure and there isn't much you can do about it in a lot of cases. I noticed that your aperture setting on that first photo was f/14. This may be why. Using a larger aperture at night with a shorter than maximum exposure length will certainly reduce the flare of the lights. In many cases, when I do night shots, I will use f/8 or f/11 when possible. There is a tradeoff between aperture size and the length of the exposure, obviously.
I like the silhouettes/ghosts of the kangaroos in the second shot. That works nicely :)

I would first suggest to find your white balance. I see to many people trying to take photographs and they don't change the white balance on their camera to adjust the color of light from the main light sources coming through at night. One picture is red and your other is green. Then your next probablem is your subjects if your taking pictures of something take a picture of it like kangaroos well they are tiny in your picture and really are well not much to consider. Probably if you could have zoomed in on them the lens flare may not have had such a dramatic effect on the picture itself. I would say practice your composition and if your worried about camera settings try to get them ready before you freeze your ass or or learn your camera like second nature. |

hmm yes, thanks for the comments..
about the kangaroos being too small, I didnt have time to change my lens.. I had a wide angle on. As for white balance, that is intentional. I shot these in RAW, and changed the white balance on the computer.
Yes.. know your camera grasshopper! I guess thats what this is.. trying things out, that I normally wouldn't attempt :-)
I kinda like the way the lights flare in a star, rather than a circle. John, did you say that wide aperture increases that type of flare? I'd like to try that a bit more.

No.. wider aperture and shorter exposures reduce that effect. If you want to increase it, stop down all the way.

Not exactly a nightshot, but it's a longer exposure pic in low ambient light.
