Came out of the restaurant, and BAM! Here this was. Reminded me of the movie Independence Day. Most likely giving off some funnel clouds over there in E CO. too bad I could not find anything interesting for the foreground.
Straight out of the camera (RAW) with slight adjustments to levels, and of course sharpening (off in camera)
Shot at 1/1000 in aperture priority. f4.0 ISO 200 18mm (kit lens)

Looks more like the neighboring town being nuked than a UFO to me. Glad it's just really weird weather. |

Would this happen to be in the direction of AREA 51? |

Left you this comment, but forgot the link:
Some of the NOAA websites have photo galleries to which people contribute interesting pictures of atmospheric phenomena. Here's a link to the Portland office, where I submitted a couple of pictures I'd taken up there.
//www.wrh.noaa.gov/Portland/gallery.html
You should put that up as a print. Then submit it to some other sites with a link-back to the print page ... Despite my somewhat flippant remarks in the associated thread, this is a great capture -- go ahead and "finish" it.
DANG! I just noticed one of my photos was on the front page of their gallery tonight ... I was looking around for a search box so I could see if my pictures were still there when I noticed a familiar (i.e. my) name under one of the thumbnails. :)

Thnks Paul...look into that site. Is pretty cool, as I have always loved learning about weather, and now chasing it for pics.
Another recent.
Possibly, Mammatocumulus clouds (suppose to be associated with tornados-that would have been extraordinary in the mountains at 9000 ft-also easy to remember...mmmmm....booooobies!)...I learned, thanks to Paul (GeneralE) and his link to NOAA.gov.
Took this one on my birthday. camera was acting up (mirror sticking), so my EXIF was not recording. Still editing this one for a probable print.
Saw your pic, too, Paul. Cool |

Maybe Independance Day 2 is in production? It's just a prop ; )
Sweet shot.
The BBC also accept submissions for their gallery of weather photos if you're interested:

Cool! Great links to even see more of this.
Here I brought up the grass and road a bit. A little color change in the cloud with some darkening in it overall with a gradient. I am contemplating dodging and burning, but I want it to stay looking as close to original saw it. Yeah or neah?

No dodging or burning..just cropped a little to cut out part of a street lamp..and added the "plastic" filter on photoshop.

Wonderful capture of a dramatic phenomenon. Is that a supercell or just a big thunderhead?
Your improvements really made a difference. |

Yeah, that looks even better! I really like shooting clouds, for the shape and texture more than their potential weather contribution. I think some of the best-quality ones are in this gallery. |

Here is the final that is awaiting to be a print. I adjusted this one for WIndows monitors to web.
I have faves on it! Cool! Gonna have to get an update to them. Thanks all

I really like that Sunset Palms. Awesome contrast in color. The Laurel and Hardy is pretty funny, too! |

Thanks! That L&H photo seems surprisingly popular ... maybe I'll try reshooting under other conditions ... I just took that one while I was getting gas one day. |

Fantastic image Tracy! My only comment is that if it was me, I think I would have been very tempted to stand on the double-yellow line in the middle of the road, since right now it has that "pulled off to the side of the road look" to it, and I keep imagining how it would look with a desolate, asphalt road leading down the middle of the frame... |

Eddy has a great point. Might this be a candidate for adding in that particular element? It's not a challenge entry, you aren't using it as a photojournalistic piece...
