Is this still life? I would think this photo would not go more than 5+ (mid)

It looks like an attempt was made to create something that might have occurred "naturally," i.e., someone is reading a book by candlelight (bad idea) and gets called away, so puts his glasses down on the book. This is bad form for still life, which should feel as if it's arranged to create a beautiful composition, i.e., art for art's sake. As bear has mentioned, you can use symbolism, but that needs to be something much more sophisticated than a pair of glasses on a book.
But technically, yes, it is a still life. You have met the challenge. NO ONE FOR YOU.

For something that isn't a significant genre of photography it sure has a lot of photographic rules. :P

Not rules, just opinions. |

I think the definition of still life should not be left to google and wikipedia to decide. We are all artists in some way by deciding to be photographers. Whether it be a hobby or a job for you. All interpretation of techniques have gray area. Nothing is always black and white and if you vote that way you are not opening up your mind.
Free yo mind people. |
I second this.
Some people comment that photos on DPC aren't unique, and other people vote low on any photo that doesn't meet the most narrow minded interpretation of a challenge description. Lets reward creativity and not punish it.
Edited my atrocious spelling and grammar.

I wish I could take a photo of small ball made of metal (taken from a pinball machine) besides a "LIFE" magazine and call it Steel Life. Unfortunatelly I did not have the time to look for the magazine.
Then I entered something that will surely be DNMC'ed by many people. I'm happy to enter any challenges anyway, just for the addiction. 5'ish average will be good for this one.

People of DPC (those who entered to BW Still Life)... hang on to your seats and buckle up. This will be the bumpiest ride you ever had (At least lately)... I Have Pepto-Bismol for my stomach, just in case if I get sick. Keep a brown-bag handy if you don't have a medicine. |

That combined with the knock out side challenge and you may need 2 bottles.

Easy there big fella... If we're talking about still life, probably one of the lightest ruled style, but difficult to create. I don't think we should be putting too much bureaucracy into our mind when we vote this one.
Rules are good only when they are told. "BW still life)... it is BW. "Still Life in Motion" it is in motion. "Still life with fruit" it is with fruit.
the rest, is your imagination and that's what should be voted. |

I was talking in general. Seriously, for you I just pointed out that rules for this challenge probably should not be that much to be able to get where we want to go. |

As unique as yourself sticking to a narrow definition of a genre? It has indeed been an interesting discussion. |

I'm in. I'm conventional and unexciting. I'm not telling a story, so I'm safe from Don's wrath. I'm beating my average, albeit not by a huge amount, so at least I'm in the running in the knockout side challenge.
I wonder how that FourPoint7 guy is doing?

Well, except for fruit, they are all shots of products of some kind. And even the fruit is usually in a basket or bowl, which is an advertiseable product. Heck, even fruit can be advertised, which makes it a product shot. Everything in this challenge is total DNMC! |
