Ran into this on Lifehacker and thought it also applied to improving one's photography skills. Makes a lot of sense to me.

great note from a commenter:
The other half of the Dunning-Kruger effect is that competent people tend to underestimate their abilities in relation to others, aka illusory inferiority. |

Dunning-Kruger isn't about poor decision-making so much as it is an indication of an epidemic of mediocrity in a society whose individuals are bombarded with false praiseyttyw
(Thought I'd leave the result of the cat walking across the iPad. Looked cute.) |

DPC must be a Dunning-Kruger theorist's dream.

I'm not sure I agree with this. While I'm not necessarily advocating the DPC style, it remains that those who receive praise are at least successful within the realm of DPC friendly photos. There is criticism, and the photos that succeed do legitimately succeed in their given genre. Flickr, on the other hand, is generally far more worthless, and perhaps a better example of the dream you note. DPC can definitely have those moments where it's akin to asking your best friends what they think, but I would argue that it isn't nearly so bad as many other avenues. |

Yeah. I'm definitely here for the no holds barred feedback. Flickr and my friends and family are unhelpful for progress. |

I believe that this mainly applies to those who are too stupid to know that they are stupid, not those of us who truly are great... ;o)
To be Frank... (tada!) if you are not always open to learning, then you really are stupid. |
