10D was originally announced in Feb/Mar 2003. It didn't really ship until roughly 1 year ago. Life cycle is typically at least 18 months, so you could potentially expect something in late Autumn for the Christmas market or early next year.

Has there been news that the 10D is being discontinued? I hadn't heard anything either way. |

well out here in Canada the 10d has been on back-order since roughly March. I've been waiting for one since the beginning of June and will be waiting likely until the beginning of August. They're still pumping them out for now but I dont know for how long. |

There have been recent threads over at DPReview referring to comments allegedly made by a non-US Canon representative that had supposedly just returned from a Canon meeting. His comments referred to a camera with the 1D Mk II sensor, (8.3Mpx, 1.3x crop) but lower frame rate (option for 5 fps) at a list price of $2200US, street of $1800US. If there is any truth to these comments, we might expect an announcement around September 30 or so, in conjunction with Photokina.
I personally will believe it when I see the Canon announcement, but if it's what the rumors say it will be, I'm sooooo there.

Where in Canada are you? In SW Ontario, I can walk into a store and buy one... at least, that was the case only last week.
Well, *I* couldn't buy one... but you know... someone with money... :)

when I bought my mark ii a couple weeks ago the salesperson said there may be a ' new version' coming out in the fall september/october and she said possibly a new high end lens that would cover a bigger range than the 24-70mm L. (She was saying I may want to wait to buy a lens in this range, i was deciding between that one and the 16-35mm,17-40mm) She was not too sure what it was going to be tho.

It makes approximate sense from a product roadmap standpoint...

I did hear a while back the Canon was reducing 10D production so they could devote more resources to keeping up with demand for the 300D but this is the first I've heard of backorders and long waits. You may want to shop a little further. The stores here in Baltimore have 10Ds on the shelves.
When the 10D replacement does come I really hope it is not a reduced feature version of another model like the 300D was, but rather a new edition equal in quality to the 10D with updated features. |

There will no doubt be a cut down version to replace the 300D some point in the future too - if you look at Canon's film SLR products, they have a high-end (EOS1), mid-tier (Elan 7 roughly == D60/10D) and entry level (Rebels) products there too. I doubt the 10D replacement would be in the cheaper 300D space though, probably a feature upgrade on the 10D (bigger sensor, more pixels, better AF - much like the rumor kirbic mentioned)
That'll then trickle down to a low end/300D replacement 6 months later when the yields go up on the sensors further.

I hope the 10D Mark II will be the equivalent of EOS 3 (same autofocus/metering performance as 1v but just less frames per second). But that 1D mark ii is sooo tempting at the moment.....
Speaking of 10D replacement -- the Fuji S3 should be out this September with a Canon mount version as well.... if so, then i'll seriously considers it. |

I've also heard rumours that we'll be able to upgrade/retrofit the 10d to larger higher mega/pixals and sensor... jump it up to 8. |

Seems doubtful but possible - you'd need to replace all of the internals - buffer memories, sensor, processor - would probably cost close to the price of a new camera just for the parts, never mind the installation costs & handling. These are consumer items - you are supposed to throw them away after 18 months and get the latest & greatest :)

Latest stuff I read about was a 9+mp CMOS, 1.6x crop factor in a new body. Name: 7D
Dpreview 10D forum discussion.
At Photokina there will definitely be a new 1Ds, more bang for less buck.
At the moment I am very interested in the rumoured new Olympyus E1 (there might be two, a new Pro and a new Consumer version). If they adress the resolving power and noise issues (issues to me, perhaps not to another) and don't up the price it could be a great camera. It is small, light, high build quality, good features, very natural in the hand, weathersealed and it has that great Sonic Wave dustshaker. I've asked a few owners, but they never need to clean the sensor.
Olympus also needs to make a 25 or 35mm F1.4 prime.
I would like to see more manufacturers put in a dustshaker on the CCD/CMOS. Wouldn't mind if the price goes up to pay Olympus patents, because you could save a lot of money on cleaning supplies, but more importantly: always dustfree photos.

I don't know what's up with how I use my camera, but I haven't cleaned the sensor since I got it, and don't have much in the way of dust problems.
Maybe I don't stop down often enough :)
Edit: Not saying the problem doesn't exist, but in over 18 months, I don't have much in the way of dust on my sensor, and I've been using it in pretty harsh environments but I'm pretty careful about how I change lens, having the new one ready to go before I take the old lens off, always pointing the camera down when the lens is off, switching the cam off before changing lenses etc.

just found a great thread at Dpreview, it seems they are almost certain that an 8MP replacement is impending this September
information still a bit spotty and lots of speculation, but it appears this Paul guy is extremely credible...
