Just wanted to let people know I noticed at Yahoo Photos (//photos.yahoo.com), that they now have unlimited storage and as long as you visit it once every 3 months or so, they are permanent.

I may be wrong but don't they have bandwidth quotas?

Hm, who knows anymore. They do on websites, but photos? I've never used that service extensively so I don't know. However they did just upgrade e-mail accounts to 100MB (from 6MB!!!), so who knows...

I see you have to install their "easy upload tool" to access this service. Just wondering if this also installs spyware and other harmful stuff to your computer? Anyone know? |

Ad-aware didn't catch anything with it, so I don't think it is a problem. They are also a major company (not a shady outfit), so I tend to trust them a little more. I don't read anything about bandwidth on it.
Only problem I have found so far is I can't figure out how to get to the full sized image, and not just the smaller version.
One other thing, print prices seem pretty good (19cents/4x6), but don't know quality yet, I ordered some, so we will see.

I don't know if you can...erm...I know that in the Groups you can't see the larger version, but I do think there used to be a text link or something to view the larger size in Photos...

I'm actually inclined to trust them a little less. Yahoo has some history with changing TOS on a dime. Their content rules may, or may not cause problems for some folks.
Read through their TOS very, very carefully.

I often wonder why so many places on the web offer photo space for free. What's in it for them? Is building traffic to get more ad views on their site enough to make it economically viable, or do they have to do other things to make money? |

Some sites, Sony's comes to mind, grant themselves non-exclusive copyright to the shots you upload.
Edit. Changed royalties to copyright.

Higher value to advertisers, as you are going to be further promoting the site for the hosting company (i.e., its a fair bet that if I put pictures on line, I'll direct my friends towards that site too)
More hits are more hits and people looking at pictures are 'sticky' eyes, lots of clicks/hits...

There used to be a text link to view the photos at full size, but alas, it is removed. No matter what size you upload, Yahoo takes the liberty of shrinking it for you. It's too bad, too.
I use Yahoo all the time to share photos with my family - they all want to see what my baby looks like all the time. But I don't think I would use it for real pictures.
