The weight of the pro bodies of both makes are essentially equivalent. The D90 does not equal the Mark IV series. The D2, D3, and D300/700 Series are all similar in size to your BFs camera. |
oh I know the D90 isn't even close to the Mark IV series. I should add, says he wouldn't mind learning to shoot Nikon so long as he can get his hands around it comfortably! And fwiw I'd probably go the d3 after the D90. But probably not for awhile. |

haha. Subtle!
Yeah, I was more comfortable with the Canon menu system. A friend of mine was just the opposite, he liked the Nikon layout better since he's functionally illiterate with an IQ just beyond Creationist. :-P

I got into a canon system because my supervisor recommended the t2 when I asked about an SLR. Then I chose the XTI because the lens matched up, even though the lens stunk and I didnt realize it at the time.
I have shot both though, I like the Nikon's quieter shutter, especially shooting events. However, I like how easy it is to navigate the Canon system a whole lot better.
Im hoping to see what the 1Ds Mk IV looks like when it comes out, Ive been stalking that camera for a while now. Other than that, Im really looking into a Medium Format system soon, which I think will be a whole different game. |

I wish Nikon would make a 400 f5.6 telephoto, like Canon does. It bums me out, that the girl friend doesn't have this option. It just seems the alternatives either focus to slow, or are at least 4 pounds in weight (Sigma). Any good alternatives for a birding lens in Nikon mount?
I wonder.....We should start a petition for it. Let's get Snaffles a new 400mm f5.6 ED VR AIS lens!

When I was to make a decision between Nikon and Canon, I chose Nikon D70s for the following reasons:
1. Many reviews said Nikon's matrix metering is ahead of Canon's evaluative metering (I have not been able to make the difference out till date. I have used both Canon and Nikon SLR's)
2. Nikon's off-camera flash system was a clear discriminator (which Canon 7D has now)
3. Reviews said, the kit lens (Nikkor 18-70mm lens that came along with my D70s) is of superior quality for a kit lens (I would agree with that point 100%. It is a sharp and fast lens for that price)
4. Nikon D70s and 18-70mm lens kit fitted my budget then
Advantages I frequently hear about Canon:
1. Great line-up of lenses and multiple options (eg: 70-200 f/4 would be a poor man's 70-200 f/2.8; and a 24-105 f/4 would be a cheaper substitute for 24-70 f/2.8)
2. Autofocus is better and faster
3. Great performance on higher ISO's (may not be true any longer, as Nikons are equally competitive now with their own CMOS sensors)
4. All the more, advertisements in photo magazines or photographs in sports magazines will have a bunch of professional guys with the white lenses (as a Nikonian I feel kinda jealous sometimes;)). But there have been successful photogs using Nikon for over years. To name a few, Steve McCurry, Manuel Librodo, Joe McNally, Scott Kelby, David Hobby and more.
My personal opinion is it never ends. If you own one, you always wish to have the other. It purely depends on what you want.
I think it is time for me to switch to Hasselblad and get out of this whole Nikon or Canon thing :-P

Funny, when I was buying my first dSLR, I did tons and tons of research. On paper it seemed that the Canon Rebel would be the most suitable. I even ordered a lens online from Amazon before I bought the body. Then I went to the store and absolutely hated the way the Rebel (and the 20D) felt in my hands, so cancelled the originally ordered camera, returned the lens and bought the camera that felt better to use, which at the time was the D70s.
I don't think it matters which brand, as long as it feels right, but once you have invested time and money in lenses and learning the nuances of the camera system, it's probably easier to stay with what you have chosen. |

Exactly. I learned on the D40 so going to the D90 was easy, and all my lens fit. And the 20D was, and is a great camera and I am having fun playing with it shooting widlife, but I do notice the small things...like from the way the lenses mount the *wrong* way to weight, LCD size etc.
Still, I don't mind the fact that I am conversant in Canon but pretty much fluent in Nikon :-) |

I chose to go with Nikon since I have their lenses. I like the 2 CF-Card slot and it’s excellent in low light. I like the full frame sensor. The video is only half HD, but it is 24p in 3 sizes. Both can zoom in on the LCD in live view before video recording starts. I use Quantum Turbo 2×2 and 3 batteries. Video eats more batteries. My D200 was a true battery hog. Canon is currently the HD DSLR leader. Canon had some problems in recording sound externally. Get Photoshop CS5 and either video can be used in Premiere, straight from the camera’s CF card, no transcoding required.
Here are some high speed examples using ISO 12,800 in just outdoor park lighting after sundown. Shot closeup and fast. 18 pictures in 5-Seconds only available light 9:57:20PM 12800 ISO Cleaned up Raw+JPG-Fine using Noise Ninja.
They each have their pros and cons and shooting situation specialties, if you can̢۪t use a work around like a strobe, etc. then get the one best suited for your shooting situation.

Following is from Photographyreview - October 2009, comment excerpts below:
Nikon D90 vs. Canon EOS 50D
"Neither camera will magically make you into a great photographer if you have no experience or vision. But both cameras will expand the abilities of working still photographers who want to shoot faster and get better images in more extreme conditions"
"Both of these cameras are great, like the cars I mentioned. Some corner better, some handle the straightaways better, but in the end, it comes down to the driver. Give a sixteen year old boy with a driver̢۪s permit a Ferrari, and chances are it̢۪s going to be wrapped around a tree come next week. But give a professional race car driver a Mustang, he̢۪ll run rings around the kid with the Ferrari."
"It̢۪s like Toyota vs Honda"
"Nikon vs Canon is a silly argument, it̢۪s like trying to differentiate btw BMW or Mercedes, or a Blonde vs Brunette.
At the end of the day they all have pro̢۪s and cons, everybody is different and everyody has diff needs and tastes so thank goodness we have options extending well beyond the realms of these simply these 2 brands."

Your choice will depend exclusively on what kind of computer you use to process your files.
Are you a PC or a Mac user? |

It does not matter... I chose to go with Nikon 35 years ago while studying photography in Japan. I went on factory tours for Nikon, Olympus, Ricoh, and Pentax. I was most keen on the Olympus OM-1 camera at the time. Ricoh was a major player as was Pentax in the 70s. Canon was a smaller player back then, so they were not a contender for me then, but they are a serious contender today.
Nikon treated me so well that I was permanently hooked to them for life due to their amazing, customer care, after-sales service and technical support. So, it is often the little things that sway a decision like this, but whatever your reasons, they are all excellent products.
The creativity is not provided in the box with the camera, that comes from within the photographer. So, ultimately, they are all simply tools for the artist to craft their images. The quality of the work has little to do with the tools and far more to do with the photographer.
