Lately I've been voting on all the images right after they post. I usually wind up putting them in categories, like those who have posted earlier. I typically wind up with several 7-8 photos, a lot of 6-5-4 photos, and occasionally a few 3-2-1 photos. I spend the rest of the week going back through them, over and over, until I get them sorted out. I almost always wind up with a ten or two, four or five 9s, and so forth and so on. I rarely have 1's and 2's, but they do happen. I'm glad I'm not the only one who votes like that.

My newspaper shot has been sliiiiiiiiding around a lot...it started in the mid 6 range, down to 5.0 something, and now it's been pretty steady at 5.5. I'm OK with average! ;o)

I wonder why my scores always stay very stable? How boring!
06/24/2004 09:03:59 PM · #29
I would like mine to be above 6 but it's unlikely to happen as it's been around 5.5 since voting started (selective desaturation). It's my 3rd entry and the previous ones scored less.

if a photo dose not meet the challenge then it should be voted 1 or removed from the challenge even if its the best photo submited to the challenge, best would be if you dont have a picture that fits the challenge then dont submit.
I think there should be a guied on how to vote cause it seems every one is using diffrent methods.

if you always vote very low then the once that always vote very high have more impact on the outcome.

What I'm wondering is how I have 165 votes and only 86 views? I'm at 5.0424 right now. Started off somewhere around 5.5, then took a drastic dip into the 3s, assumedly after GW bashed my image and voted 1.

They implemented that views counter after voting started, so that's probably why they don't match. At least it makes sense to me. Who know! :o)

edit: I have 173 votes and 126 views on desat, but on newspaper, which started either right before or right after the view counter was implemented, I have 145 votes and 196 views.

I think you missed mine. And while you're at it -- can you make that 3 higher on mine?? LOL

And, Kylie, you accidentally marked mine down 1, could you go back and raise it 2 or 3 so it's like everyone else's? Thanks in advance.

What happens if we all vote 10 on all of them - we'd all get ribbons?

IMO I think it's not right to say that an average photo in each challenge should have an average rating. I'm not giving the best photos a 10, just because they're best in their challenges. Also an average photo in each challenge shouldn't be rated with an average rating (5-6), just because it's a midrange photo in the challenge. I think I haven't yet given a 10 (not at least in last two open challenges), I have only given ratings to 999 photos in total with an average vote cast of 4.3894. In the "Newspaper" challenge, the average vote/rating that I gave is somewhere around 4.5, and the average rating in the "Choises" challenge a bit lower, maybe 4.2.

An average vote in the DPC rating system is 5.5. An average vote cast is IMO not the same. If the best photo can be noticeably improved, or could have been better in any way (although the photographer couldn't have done anything to change it), I think it's not right to give it a 10, just for being the best. I gave three entries a 8 vote and one I gave 9 in the "Newspaper" challenge.

This is just my opinion, and I respect others opinions.

This challenge has had the most variable scoring for me. I started out on Monday morning with 4.8+, my lowest opening day score to date. Then in the next 36 hours, it climbed all the way back up to 5.3+ to fall back down to 5.0+. Image is scoring just above 5.2+ now and should end in that range.

As for my scoring technique, I sort of classify images into categories at the beginning. Strong well-composed clear images that fully meet challenge as I interpret it get 8. Images that are good but not as good as my 8 category get clasified as 6 and another category gets assigned 4. After that has been done, I review the images by category and re-assign them scores. The 8's usually get assigned scores of anywhere between 7 and 10 (with usually only one or two 10's and maybe three to four 9's), 6's usually between 7 and 5, 4's between 5 and 2. I very rarely assign 1's except to exceptionally poor images. As for awesome images that do not meet the challenge in any way, I usually give 4 or 5: rewards author for technical merit without patting them on the back for trying to shoehorn an image into a challenge topic.

To give a photo a 5 without them meeting the challenge is like giving a cyclist chance in a marathon running competition. It's just not fair to others that have photos clearly meeting the challenge and their outcome is a lower score.

I understand these challenges as we're sent out with a challenge desciption that we have to have in mind when we're taking part in the challenge. Choosing the best photo that we have taken past week and shoehorning it into a challenge topic doesn't feel right for me. But that's just my opinion.

Thanks.. :)
