Drew -- totally agree with you on both points.

I'm not talking about this week's comments at all. Just last weeks. My next lowest number of comments was 21. 12 just seemed really low.

As for if those of us "complaining" would all comment, that's the reason for my policy. If I got comments from everyone on a challenge, I'd comment on all the photos. I know it's not entirely fair -- I might not end up commenting on any of the images taken by those people who comment on mine -- but it seems the fairest I can come up with.

I am trying to use comments to improve my own ability in photography. When I make a comment, it is about either something that I like or something that i don't like. Doing this over and over again puts certain issues in the forefront of my mind each time I get behind my own camera. As I compose a photograph, I think about a LOT more things based on comments that I have MADE moreso than comments I have received. So, I believe that giving comments is more beneficial to me personally than receiving them.

I like to receive comments, but I don't think I'm gonna stop commenting on all the photos every week unless there is some reason that I'm unable to do it.

The real numbers may or may not surprise you:

... you asked for it ;)[/i]

Thanks! I didn't know it was "so easy" (having minimal database experience). I'd say those numbers pretty much agree with what I said. I think the marked skewing towards the higher-scoring photos can be attributed to the facts that there are far fewer (so any one comment has a greater effect on the percentage), and that people like to write more when they have something positive to say. Now I wish we could parse the text of the comments to see how many offer "constructive suggestions" vs. only what they like/don't like.

I've long believed the best way to really learn something is to teach it to others. Understanding means being able to correlate facts, not merely rcall them. Teaching forces you to think about the topic in a larger context, and to organize the information in a way most useful in the current situation.

225 Votes - 5 comments : 2.2%

I'm not really sure why this last pic did so bad in the voting, I'm guessing it might have been the optical (not digital) disortion from the glass in the globe I used. It looked a bit digital since the lines in the glass were horizontal on the pictrue, and some chromatic abberation was apparent. Oh well.

This is only my second entry but my vote-comment ratio is much higher this time... about 11%... but it doesn''t really concern me too much.

Most of the comments are helpful and I appreciate the comments that tell me what''s right or wrong with the photo and don''t include comments like "...This wouldnt pass my quality threshhold for staying out the trashcan, let alone submission to a competition. ..."

I don''t feel qualified to make many comments on the technical aspects of other people''s photos but I do comment when I see something I like. I think it''s as important to reinforce the aspects of a shot which enhance it as well as pointing out the flaws. A few of the comments I''ve recieved have done just that - pointed out what''s good and what''s bad. Those are the most helpful ones.

I''m not as accomplished a photographer as many of you and I participate here to help me learn. I''ve already learned a lot. Putting it into practice is harder than learning the theory of course. :) So, I''ll keep trying and I''ll continue to appreciate the constructive criticism.

I''m babbling again, huh? Well... the point is... I don''t much care about the vote-comment ratio. The quality of the comments is much more important than the quantity.

Mark
