Giving exact details will help clean it out if the sypware programs won't. "Like infomash or some other weird site" doesn't help much. We could spend all day guessing what's wrong or we could get down to business.

You could try deleting and restoring FF. Whatever is the problem may leave along with it. Not necessarily, but worth a try. Backup your bookmarks first.

Try system restore, it usually works.

I am by no means a computer savvy person, but I have serious doubts that resorting to system restore will solve any problems dealing with viruses, snd it is my understanding that using System Restore will effectively remove all of the Restore points that previously existed.

She Likely does not know enough about it to give us those details until we ask specific questions.

The fact that it is only doing it to FF is at least a good sign.

I don't know if this addresses your problem specifically, but you might consider reading This

Specific question: What is the exact website you are directed to?

I did a search on "firefox redirects to infomash" and found a lot of postings in a lot of forums on this subject. The answers all suggest that repeatedly running spyware scans with different products may eventually get rid of it. My own experience with trying to clean up infected computers has been that each malware scan cleans up some stuff and reveals other things that the next tool can find. cycle back through them a second time when you get done with the recommended scanners.

What antivirus are you using? Be aware, that though you can run different spyware scanners in sequence, you should not install multiple A/V programs. This is because the A/V apps use some virus-like behavior themselves and therefore they interfere with each other and are actually less effective that just using one.

I use AVG pro (which i just realized had its malware scanner OFF) and have been for years... its a paid version and I am very happy with it. The program that e10icus had me download found a strand malware - i googled it and it is known to cause this problem. its been removed. I tested it several times and the problem seems to be fixed. I created a restore point (just in case) and we will see if it starts again.

Here's something else you can try. It is a "nuke it from orbit" approach. AVG antivirus rescue CD.

Here are instruction for how to use it

You will have to burn the ISO file to a CD or create a bootable flashdrive. By using this, you are not scanning using the operating system that is infected. The hard drive is dormant because you have booted from removable media, so the malware is not able to hide. Preferably download this and burn the disk on another computer.

Glad you finally got it.

I've been using AVG free version for years. I really ought to send them some money considering all the computers I have installed it onto. They deserve a few $ from me.

FWIW Firefox drives me out of my freakin' mind. After one too many re-installs of my browser, and sessions of waiting up to 7 minutes for freakin Hotmail to load via Firefox, I let Windows Vista choose the explorer updates it needed. eh wala.

IE and I dont get along... Firefox and I are best friends... this wasnt firefox's fault LOL

I use the free version in combination with the NoScript extension and that custom hosts file I mentioned earlier. Nothing is 100% secure. Not even a Mac. (Because I know someone will pop in soon with the suggestion to solve your problem with a Mac)

I used IE at work when I first started there. Drove me up that same freakin' wall. after a few months I eventually installed Firefox and IT has not said a word. Being a technology company, I'm sure I am not the only one using it.

BTW, I read the other day that IBM has declared Firefox as the companies official browser.

Maybe I have the free version of Firefox? Dunno...so long as either one of them is working well...and before the tables were turned with IE sucking and FF being the better of the better of the two.

There is no pay version of FF. They make their money off search engine interactions through their homepage and search bar.

Just an FYI,

Paid and free versions of AVG have failed to stop problems. Oddly enough the thing that is free that is working best is from Microsoft. Microsoft security essentials. It's free doesn't take a whole lot of resources and has yet to miss catching something on 25 systems I keep running.

I've heard good about the MS product, but as far as which is best, that keeps flip-flopping every year or two. I tried Antivir after Maximum PC rated it highly, but everytime it does an update it nags me to get the pay version.

I've been sticking to AVG, A-squared, Zone Alarm, and SpyBot S&D with good luck so far. A friend of mine has recently switched from AVG to AVAST and really likes it, but I haven't checked it out, myself.
