Thank you.
I used 2 430ex speedlites fired with radiopoppers. I had one in a apollo 28" softbox just out of the frame and the other was used as a hairlight with dome diffuser setup behind them. The shot with the cowboy hat I used a reflector as well to bounce some light up.
The shot on the bench I used both 430's in the softbox at full power(had to since the box had to be set so much further away) and I used a reflector to bounce some light back onto them. |

Thanks for sharing that info. I still haven't gotten my flash off the camera yet but when I do, I'd love to capture something like this. Nice job. |

Thank you. I love being able to put my flashes wherever but it does increase the amount of stuff I have to carry lol. I love my apollo softbox though. |

I am trying to photograph a VERY reflective sphere. Not having much luck in lighting it and would love ANY suggestions you mentors have on lighting. It is made of polished stone so it's very, very reflective.

Four things you'll need -
1. Black or white pillow case (depending on your choice of high or low key) (I'm assuming this is portable smaller sphere, if not, you're going to be really limited)
2. Clip on aluminum light dishes (walmart - $5 or so) with ---
3. daylight CFL bulbs (2 for 10$, get the 26W (100W equivalent)..)
4. 2 pieces of super bright white cloth, about 1 1/2" square, and a couple of rubber bands..
.
Put the CFL's into the dishes, and cover with the cloth, securing the cloth (as a diffuser) with the rubber bands. (diffuser is only needed if you don't use a pillowcase, or don't shine the lights through the pillowcase..
Now, set your aperture to just narrow enough to get the minimum DOF you want, and shoot away (too much DOF and reflections become an even more serious problem...).
Put the sphere into the pillowcase, turn on your lights and shoot away..
Have fun, I can't wait to see the results..

This appears to be working though not quite as I'd anticipated. The guidance and advice seems to be going on behind the scenes as people ask for help with their challenge entries. Perhaps as the challenges end, we should post some of the back and forth on the images it helped, so that others can benefit.
In the case of JustCaree, she seems to have taken a huge leap forward. I helped her with advice on editing her bovines shot and she nailed her first five, she went and did a reshoot of her weathered entry and it's in the high 5's. I didn't help at all with spheres and she's pulling a 6+ it appears!
Without giving away any entries, has anyone else seen a jump in their performance from the help they've gotten in this thread?

ive been working with two coaches in pms, on two entries so far.
i could not reshoot either. however, using advice from them when taking my second shot and during processing has my normal 4.x range in the 5.x range. I'll post at the end of the challenge. |

I think I have learnt a lot from this so far. A bit of one-to-one chatter about attributes, shortcomings etc of a shot really makes you think about what you discussed before you enter your next one. It took me a while to realise something very simple, that you need to consider everything in your shot to really make it do well.
It's early days yet to be talking much about trends, but it looks like I'll be getting two back-to-back 5.75+ers, which is nice (and PGerst promises me a new PB with my spheres entry!). I've been working with PGerst and Yo_Spiff and their eye for detail's great. For my chaos entry 'twas suggested I make it look more chaotic, which a lot of folk here commented on. I tried reshooting (at a different location) and couldn't reproduce a satisfactory picture (I had my camera balanced in an intricate network of my nephews' toys!).
I've found this whole thing very positive. There's great encouragement and learning to be had from the mentors. My only problem with it is that I feel I'm annoying them with the back and forth PMing.

Just a tip that may or may not be useful. One thing that has worked for me over time, to help develop a critical eye for my own entries, is to put a list of anticipated critiques in the pre-challenge notes. Sometimes they are real flaws that I don't have the ability to fix, sometimes they are aspects that I expect will not be to everyone's preference, but are not really flaws. This has helped me step outside myself and try to view my image as someone who is voting on it. It also turns the receipt of negative critiques into a game. I call it "DPC bingo". |

I wouldn't be participating in something like this if I didn't enjoy doing it. It's also a learning experience for the person offering the help. |

Fun! I think you need to make a bunch of mini shoehorn bugs. I'd buy those :) They'd make good prizes.

It's an ego thing. When you start pulling in ribbons, we'll feel discarded and unwanted again. |

I'm a long ways from ribboning... besides... I like to ask questions(if you haven't noticed) and I have no confidence (if you haven't noticed) my spheres entry was the first entry that I didn't beg for people to look before I used it LOL. Ill make sure you always feel used... I mean needed.
