A lot of people are ragging on the Canon 7D, especially about noise. Then some others say, "no, it's fine". I just got a 7D and I'm getting a little worried. Should I have gone with something else in that price range Canon-wise? I didn't want to go to Nikon because I've always shot with Canon and am comfortable with it. But was the 7D a bad choice? I'll be shooting portraits, events, maybe some weddings, etc. I can't afford the 5dii yet.

Funny. I just registered yesterday. I'll start getting involved very soon (I don't have a lens yet).

Quick history: I did photography for about 6 years straight and stopped about two years ago when I was on a mission to get out of debt and sold all my equipment to help expedite that process. Now I'm re-acquiring equipment and have decided to make some money from photography (which I've done before--but not as serious as I'm working on it now).

So anyway...back to the original question. Was the 7D a bad choice as a stepping stone to get to the 5d?

I think you will find the 7D more than a capable camera in experienced hands..

Don't worry about noise. These days most DSLR's are light years ahead when it comes to noise compared to the first DSLR's like the original Canon Rebel 300D, let alone film...ISO 400 Film which I used to shoot with back when dinosaurs roamed the earth can't even come close to ISO 6400 from a DSLR today...So stop fretting and enjoy and learn how to use your camera.

Just gotta say... I LOVE MINE! Maybe I'm just ignorant when it comes to the finer details, but I have found zero drawbacks with my 7D. I've shot numerous times now for the city newspaper at 6400 ISO and haven't had a single complaint.

I really like mine but I'm not that impressed with the noise, especially after reading all the reviews that raved about it's lack of noise. Here's a 100% crop from an ISO 800 shot:

It's a little underexposed which doesn't help but it still seems to be quite noisy :(

I can fix your problems.. :)

Topaz De-Noise 4 - free trial - best de-noise I've seen.

To me, there's no point in pulling up a 100% crop of an unprocessed image. Although there is definitely some noise at higher ISOs, once the image has been put through even the most simple noise-reduction routine, you're good as gold. I posted this image a while back, the reason being: I was metering at 100 ISO, and the eval was asking something like 1/4 Tv...way too slow to hand-hold. Quick flip of the dial brought me to 5000 ISO and 1/125th. Bit of Noiseware and presto...serviceable image.

I believe much of the "ragging" is due to the software used to convert from raw. Before CS5 or Lightroom 3, Adobe didn't do a great job on keeping the noise down.

One thing to keep in mind that our expectations go up with every generation of camera. I see the noise in my 7D photos all the time and then wonder if it has noise issues. I recently went back through some wedding photos I took last fall with my "low noise" 40D and was amazed at how much noise they had compared to the 7D.

Taken at ISO 2500, only convert from raw, resize, sharpen.
