Im trying to get my workflow better in Lightroom and Photoshop, and one of the things I hear from the folks at Adobe is that I should be converting my RAW files into DNG to avoid the issue of having to sidecar the XMP information, and possibly having it get separated from the image file over time, not to mention saving 18% of the space to keep the same quality of information.

So I just bought a new 2 terrabyte HD and an rehauling all my old shots and going to slog through them, rate them and enter metadata so I can search them. The question is should I convert them to DNG? Is it the format of the future, or is it safer to just keep the RAW files RAW? throw me a line here, I'm lost at sea.

i prefer dng because of two reasons:

my camera can directly create me raw in dng format.

2. in future in case i need to load any raw file i do not need worry whether my raw converter supports my raw format or not.

Ironically, I don't use DNG because it's wasteful: Originally, like you, I considered converting to DNG so I wouldn't have to deal with sidecar files.

But think about it: if the Lightroom data is embedded, every time you tweak a picture in LR, your incremental backups would need to backup the DNG file rather than the XMP file! That means a lot more data to back up. That's why I changed my mind.

Also, recognize the unless your camera shoots DNG natively, and the file you submit was shot that way, you cannot use DNG's for proof at DPC.

I convert RAW to DNG out of necessity. I'm still using CS3, and my D300s is newer than what Photoshop's RAW converter will handle. Sooooo I have to convert everything first before I can open it in Photoshop.

Hi Alan, can't you update just your Camera Raw module? (put in the link for the Mac version).

When Adobe bring out another version of Photoshop, the new versions of camera raw are only supported by the new version of Photoshop.
